Natalie Therese was driving when she spotted an unusual sight on the road. At first glance, it appeared to be a furry clump, but something told her she needed to investigate.
She asked her partner to pull over, and upon closer inspection, she discovered not just a clump, but three of the most adorable creatures on earth.
“As @ghoulishbones and I were leaving our B&B, we saw these precious babies on the road! Of course, I nearly jumped out of the car to make sure they were okay and safe,” Therese shared on Instagram.
She soon realized that the otters’ mother had darted away to avoid an oncoming car and was anxiously waiting in the woods across the street.
The baby otters, however, were frozen in place.
“My partner thought [they were] just a clump of dirt or something!” Therese recounted to The Dodo.
The baby otters were stranded in the middle of the street, their mother watching helplessly from the sidelines. Therese knew she had to intervene to help the terrified little otters. She stepped out of her car and gently coaxed them off the road.
As she approached, she softly reassured the babies, “It’s OK.”
One of the otters looked directly at her and let out a squeak.
“Hiiiii!” she responded, and the little one squeaked back.
“Go get your mama!” she encouraged them.
The otter that had been squeaking at her seemed to comprehend her words and scampered off towards its mother, who was waiting in the tall grass.
However, its siblings were less cooperative. One remained in the middle of the road, while the other ran in the completely opposite direction.
With a bit more persuasion, the otter in the road finally followed its sibling towards their mother.
Therese waited a few minutes to ensure the otter that had run off in the wrong direction also reunited with its family.
“Afterward I waited a few minutes to make sure the otter that ran the other direction was reunited with the others and the mother came back for all of them. They all ended up safely off the road together,” Therese narrated in the video of her encounter with the otters.
Therese was overjoyed to see the otter family safe and reunited. Although she played a crucial role in ensuring their safety that day, she confessed that the experience had a profound impact on her as well.
She was deeply moved by the encounter, even to the point of tears.
“Mother Earth and Her creatures are so precious, and we must do what we can to protect them,” she expressed.
Therese’s video quickly gained popularity, garnering over 2,200 likes, with many viewers expressing their gratitude for her actions.
One Instagram commenter praised, “Darling little baby otters! Thank you, thank you, thank you and your friend for all you did and for being defenders of baby otters and all wild animals! Thank you for just being yourselves! Wonderful people!”
