Waking up in the middle of destruction is frightening enough.

But waking up in the midst of splintered, wood, shattered concrete, and warped metal while not knowing if your loved ones made it is especially terrifying.

Residents of Mayfield, Kentucky, are not strangers to this feeling. A storm tore through the state, causing immense damage physically and emotionally.

All of them had to endure the pain, one way or the other. Families were separated, properties were destroyed, and some pets were lost.

A Dutch journalist saw this pain first hand.

Lucas Waagmeester was reporting on the scene in Mayfield and surveyed the utter chaos from the disaster. Beams of wood were dumped on the roadside like they were sticks. Roofing was ripped like they were paper sheets.

Amid the wreckage, a woman in a purple hoodie walked towards him. While others may be thinking of how they can get back on their feet after the storm, this woman is thinking about something else. She’s thinking about her beloved dog Nola.

She described the dog to Waagmeester.

She said that Nola is black and white. It may not be much but it’s enough to keep the team started. They looked out to the wreckage to see any dog that resembled Nola.

Along the way, they saw various scenes where people tried to take account of what they’ve lost and how they started to pick up the pieces.

The woman then explained they lost Nola during the storm.

She said they were in the house when the storm rampaged across the area. The power went out before the unthinkable happened. Their house was lifted up.

When they landed, the woman said that they were 20 feet away from their original location. They found themselves in the middle of gas lines and power lines. At that point, Nola was nowhere to be found.

Losing a dog is much like losing a family member.

And at the midst of desperation and rebuilding, one cannot blame the woman for being upset and lost.

The news team walked with the woman so she can have an extra pair of eyes looking for Nola. Rubble after rubble, debris after debris, looking for someone here feels like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Just as things began to look bleak, a miracle happens.

The reporter turns towards a set of debris not far from the path they were walking on. He saw something that others didn’t notice at first.

He said, “There’s a dog there,” to which the woman quickly threw her gaze towards. At that moment, amid the brokenness and destruction, someone found a missing piece of their family.

She called out to the dog.

She screamed Nola’s name as she sprinted towards the black and white figure. A heartwarming scene unfolded as the dog basked in her embrace. One could tell that she missed her human too and now, she doesn’t need to feel alone.

Not everyone is as lucky as this woman. But it’s still comforting to know that some can find respite by getting back the love they thought they’d lost.
