Dogs are awesome, and most dog owners choose to get a dog because of their loyalty, companionship, and loving nature. Another benefit of having a dog is their guard dog tendencies. Dogs are very territorial, and most people sleep better knowing that their dog is guarding their home, always keeping one ear open for potential intruders.

When it comes to protecting their owners, you’d think that the bigger the dog, the better. So when an intruder broke into the home of a 120-pound Mastiff named Benton, the dog’s owner expected to be immediately alerted to the fact that there was a stranger in her house. But hilariously, the soft pooch didn’t make a single sound – and spent the night cuddling up with the intruder.

The dog’s owner, Lynn Sarver of Waukesha, Wisconsin, shared her story with WISN News, and it’s the funniest thing we’ve heard in a long time.

It was New Year’s Day when Lynn woke up bright and early, prepared to begin the new year in the right way. But as she walked into the living room where her pooch, Benton, spent the night, she came across a hilarious surprise.

Curled up in Benton’s bed was a complete stranger – and he was cuddled up with her sorry excuse for a guard dog.

At first, Lynn tried to think of the most logical explanation and considered whether the stranger could be her son.

“You know because he had dark hair and kind of the same size,” she told WISN News.

But on closer inspection, Lynn discovered that the man was actually a complete stranger, and she moved into the kitchen so that she wouldn’t be spotted. As Benton was clearly not much use in this situation, Lynn decided to call 911.

“When we saw him the dog was sleeping on top of him,” she said. “And we called 911 and we were hiding in the kitchen.”

A drunken mistake.

The intruder soon woke up, and it became apparent that the whole thing had been a bit of a misunderstanding. Apparently, the man had accidentally entered the wrong house unlocked patio door while he was drunk, and after spotting Benton in his cozy bed, he’d decided to take a kip with him in the living room.

We’re sure we’ve all been tempted to snuggle up with someone’s dog while drunk – though we’re not suggesting that you break into another person’s house to get your cuddle fix!

The man quickly apologized.

The man was quick to apologize for his actions and left the house with no further action needed by the police. Embarrassed as he probably was, we reckon that his drunken story would top anybody else’s!

As for Lynn, she now finds the whole ordeal pretty comical – though we bet she’s sure to check that her back door is locked before she goes to bed now!

“You know I mean he didn’t mean any harm and he was a very nice kid basically,” Lynn summarized.

Despite Benton not making a great guard dog, it’s clear that he gives the best cuddles – and we think that’s much more important! Watch Lynn’s interview for yourself below.
