A kind-hearted woman from Oregon came up with an idea to provide a temporary home to rescued dogs ready to be adopted. Animal care has been a lifelong passion for this Oregon native who decided to step up her efforts to give rescued dogs the loving home they need.

Life in shelters is often very lonely for rescued dogs waiting to be adopted into a new family. Liesl Wilhardt, the founder of Liveable Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in Oregon, knew that she wanted to help dogs all her life.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time. It began as a labor of love and doing what I could afford on my own,” she told the media. “I started with just fostering dogs in my home 17 years ago. This has been a long process evolving and I was able to do fundraising and donated a lot of my own resources and time and money.”

Liesl built tiny dog cottages decorated with furniture, paintings, and even television, for rescued dogs!

“There is a local furniture store that donates used furniture called Edgewater,” she explained. “We have flower boxes with flowers in the summer. We try to create a really cozy atmosphere because kennel stress is a really big stress for a dog. They can be fine when they get there and three months later they’re deteriorated.”

Her 55-acre property is a true dog paradise

In addition to building tiny dog cottages, Liesl has 55 acres of trails for hiking and walking the dogs. Her estate in Eugene, Oregon, is more than enough to accommodate the dogs under her care.

“We have country roads to go down the road to see horses and chickens and goats. We’re only 10 minutes from town so the dogs go for field trips to town.”

Thanks to Liesl efforts, the dogs will get the best care possible, and have plenty of fun while waiting to be adopted by a loving family!

All pups in her shelters have been rescued from death row shelters

Without Liesl, most of these cuties would never have made it and would’ve died in death row shelters.

“They’ve all come from death row, high-kill shelters,” she said. “We get most of our dogs from Southern California. We have a huge network of people we work with.”

There are currently six cottages for 10 pit bulls, 24 small dogs, and four litters of puppies but Liesl doesn’t plan to stop there.

“It takes a long time to find pit bulls homes,” she said. “There’s a much smaller pool of potential adopters for pit bulls. And then of course we have really strict standards of adopters. We don’t want them to wind up in another bad environment.”

Once neglected, the puppies are now a part of one big happy family

Liesl sees her mission as a lifelong commitment to dog welfare and it’s more than just building cottages for her dogs. It’s about family.

“There’s a lot of love here and a sense of home and belonging,” she said. “Everyone here is part of a pack and a family and the dogs need that to heal emotionally from the trauma and neglect they’ve been through.”

It’s incredibly heartwarming to know there are good people out there who care about neglected animals and will go out of their way to provide the loving environment they deserve!

Our success is not measured by the position we reached in life or how much money we made, but how much we give to others! It’s the only way to make a better world for everyone!
