Dogs can bring so much joy to anyone, but sometimes, they bring people more than just that. That’s why when someone’s dog crosses the rainbow bridge, the pain is so intense that it becomes almost unbearable. Most dog owners say losing a dog is as painful as losing a loved one.

One couple had to experience this pain too when they lost their beloved German Shepherd, Cane. The late dog succumbed to cancer and they had to let go of him at such a young age, 4 years old to be specific.

Though they have another dog, a senior one named Jurassic Slayde, and some cats, they couldn’t ignore the passing of their baby Cane Cane. The couple was definitely heartbroken and there was nobody and nothing that could possibly ease their pain.

That’s until they met another German Shepherd, Rusty.

It all started when a local dog lover who volunteers at shelters sent them Rusty’s picture who has the same pair of floppy ears as Cane.

“When we saw that picture, we just knew we had to adopt him,” the woman said.

He was then under the care of Miami-Dade Animal Services.

In hopes of having another doggo that would remind them of their beloved Cane, they went there and the couple saw Rusty. Although most dogs of their breed really look alike, there’s something in Rusty that made them really interested in bringing him home.

“On Rusty’s cage was all this red writing, not good with other dogs, acting like he was aggressive,” she said. “And it made us want him even more because we were just saying, well, what’s gonna happen to this big baby? Is anyone gonna adopt him? And we took him in.”

The couple was guessing Rusty was a stray dog before because they noticed he fears cars. Just like any other family that is welcoming a new member, a lot of adjustments have to be made. It took them a while to figure things out, then one day, Rusty just eventually fit in.

One notable thing about Rusty was the bond he created with his human dad. The two would lay on the couch together and then literally fall in each other’s arms. Rusty’s dad even started a bedtime for him every 10:00 in the evening.

In fact, when the two are deeply sleeping on the bed, Rusty’s human mommy will only have a tiny spot on the bed. Poor mommy.

Aside from Rusty and old man Slayde, the couple also has two cats, and the four of them are jiving just fine. They would all line up waiting for treats, although most of their human dad’s time always goes to Rusty because he’s a straight-up “daddy’s boy.”

Even though Rusty’s a daddy’s boy, his mommy doesn’t take it too seriously because she also loves to see the two bond together. There were times when she calls it “unfair”, but she is happier with how things are between her husband and Rusty.

There’s nothing the couple could ask for from their big happy furry family.
