For some people, a big buck would be considered a trophy. But for one woman in Aurland, Norway, he was a sign of hope. After her husband passed away, an 81-year-old lady named Mette Kvam, thought she would have to live out her final days alone.

She became friends with the most unlikely creature.

Mette, who lives by herself in a mountainside home, began to feel lonely after the passing of her husband. Day in and day out, she found herself alone and isolated. Then one day, something incredible happened.

Mette started noticing that one particular deer showed up at her house every day.

Experts tell people to never get close to deer. While they’re gorgeous and appear gentle, they can do significant harm to a person. For Mette, that warning didn’t matter. Seeing the stag with its impressive rack, she couldn’t help but fall in love with him. To her, this wasn’t some wild animal but instead, one with a gentle and kind demeanor.

She decided to offer the buck food.

One a whim, Mette pulled out a loaf of bread. As the stag stretched its neck upwards to reach the window, she handed him a piece. Rather than the deer becoming spooked, he took the piece of bread from Mette’s hand…slowly and gently. That’s when she discovered just how much this buck loved snacks of bread.

Of course, she had to give him a name.

If you’re going to feed a deer on a daily basis, it needs a name. So, Mette settled on Flippen. After the first encounter, she wasn’t sure if the buck would return for more bread. But he did. Every day, he would take his position beneath her window, patiently waiting for Mette to give him his favorite treat.

The friendship between Mette and Flippen grew into something special.

From the very first day of feeding Flippen, he came back, not just once a day, but twice. One day, a woman named Britt was taking a walk through the mountains when she saw the interaction between the two. She quickly whipped out her camera and began filming their unique bond. She captured a video from the outside and then from inside Mette’s home.

Mette no longer feels alone now that she has a beautiful friend.

Her days of feeling alone are long gone. Thanks to Flippen and his daily routine of showing up for bread, she feels alive again. When asked what she thinks about the friendship, Mette said she loves nothing more than to feed and visit with her special animal pal.

It’s been several years since these two first bonded. Today, their friendship’s still going strong. And twice every day, Flippen shows up to enjoy some bread and a few loving pats on the head from his human friend. This might be a strange friendship but it fills a void for both of them.
