Vet tech shares why it's so important to stay with your dog during euthanasia
They were always there for us...let's be there for them.

We all love our dogs and there’s nothing in this world that we wouldn’t do to make sure they’re safe and happy.

However, just like other species, dogs also age. They become weak as they get older and there is no stopping it.

Not us and not even any branch of Science.

As much as we believe in miracles, oftentimes, they do not happen.

The time will come when we need to say “goodbye”.

When the going gets tough, some pet owners choose “mercy killing”, more popularly known as “euthanasia”.

As described by Auburn Animal Hospital on their website, euthanasia… “literally means an “easy and painless death.” You may know it as “putting a pet to sleep” or “putting an animal down.” It is the deliberate act of ending life and undoubtedly it is a difficult issue.”

Sadly, during this process, some pet owners would choose to leave their pets before they even take their last breath.

Leaving their beloved pets alone in their last seconds.

For one vet tech, that is utterly unacceptable.

On her Reddit account with the username ‘u/rescuemum‘, she let everything out.

As her post read, “I work at a vet clinic and I’m sick of people dropping their dogs off to be euthanized. It might be hard to say goodbye but it’s hell for them. They already don’t like the vet, they’re confused, they’re scared, they’re sad and they’re looking for YOU when they take their last breath.”

As a worker in a vet clinic, she mentioned, “I can try to provide them as much love and comfort as I humanly can but at the end of the day I’m a stranger to them.”

That very day, she witnessed another betrayal done to a loyal dog.

On the same post, she wrote: “Today a lady dropped off her 13 year old dog to be put to sleep after I told her we didn’t have a vet in clinic as she was on farm calls all day, she insisted on leaving her there at 9am, knowing that our vet wouldn’t be back until well after 6pm. She was too busy to bring her back later, so she left her sweet girl to be alone all day before dying.”

She mentioned in the same post that she spent the day taking care of the poor dog. They went for a short walk, bought her a cheeseburger, laid on the ground, and cuddled with her.

The dog was clueless and confused. She was scared and crying. It must’ve been so hard for her to understand why she was with a stranger.

Little did she know, that’s the last person she’d be with before she go away.

It was a painful sight to watch.

Her post ended with a punch to the gut, “I kissed her and told her she was a good girl while she crossed the rainbow bridge, but her eyes never stopped looking for her family. Dogs know what’s happening, don’t do this to them. Be there when they cross that bridge. It won’t kill you, I promise.”

This is definitely a wake-up call that must be heard by everyone, whether you own a pet or not.

Again, if dogs are “man’s best friend”, why can’t we be the same to them?
