Meet Ernie: a shelter dog who spent months living in the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter.

One-year-old Ernie is a lovable pit bull-terrier mix who enjoys cuddling and playing with toys. Even though Ernie is a sweet as can be, the shelter had trouble finding a forever home for him. They even reduced his adoption fees in the hopes that someone would take a chance on him.

The City of Buffalo Animal Shelter made a video discussing why Ernie would make such a great pet for a family. But even with that, they still didn’t receive any applications for Ernie.

In October 2018, Cindy Grisanti, a volunteer dog walker, took Ernie out for a stroll. While they were on their walk, they ran into UPS driver Jason Coronado.

Coronado had parked his truck for a ten-minute break. When Ernie saw Coronado sitting in his truck, his tail started wagging. Coronado invited Ernie into his truck, and the dog eagerly hopped in. The dog put his head on Coronado’s lap, and the UPS driver’s heart melted.

“Call him up to the truck and he pretty much just hopped up in, and I was like okay,” Coronado told WKBW Buffalo. “Usually dogs aren’t big fans of the big brown truck.”

Coronado immediately fell in love with the pit bull, and Ernie loved him just as much.

“He hopped up and just sat there and did not want to leave,” Coronado said.

After a few minutes, Grisanti and Ernie left to finish up their walk. Even though they only spent a few minutes together, Coronado couldn’t stop thinking about Ernie. He hoped the sweet dog would find the right home.

About a month after Ernie and Coronado met, Coronado saw a post on Facebook about Ernie. The post said that Ernie was still looking for a forever home.

Coronado immediately knew that he wanted to bring Ernie home. He talked to his significant other and his kids, and everybody was on board with the idea.

The family went to the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter and officially adopted Ernie. Ernie was so excited to meet his new family!

Ernie has now been living with the Coronados for a few weeks, and he’s as happy as can be. He loves cuddling with his dad and his siblings.

“He likes to sleep and lounge and he likes to eat treats and he’s just a big lap dog,” Coronado said. “He is probably my idea of a perfect dog.”
