When we go on vacation, we usually aren’t thinking about helping those in need! It takes a special kind of person to go on a trip to recharge and end up helping a stray dog on the street – what would you have done?
A tourist in Romania was staying at a resort when she noticed a stray.
Stray dogs are all too common wherever we go. Whether they are slinking around in back alleys or openly begging on the streets, they are pitiful to see. Despite their circumstances, traveling tourists aren’t really looking to help all that much. For one woman, however, sitting by and watching wasn’t enough.
After seeing the dog sleeping on the street, the woman called for help.
Thankfully, the woman knew exactly what to do. Getting on the phone, she called Howl of a Dog and told them about the stray. While she waited for rescuers to show up, she decided she would go ask around for any information that people had on the dog.
Going to local shop owners, she learned something heartbreaking.
The dog wasn’t a recent addition to the scenery. From what everyone could remember, the dog had been there for years! Year after year, the little dog would beg and eat scraps, just barely getting by. After spending so much time on the streets, the dog surely was in poor condition.
When the rescuers arrived, they decided to give the pup a name.
The shakey, stray dog was named Helen! When the rescuers found her, she wasn’t doing well. Besides the normal dangers that strays are exposed to like cars and people, they often have diseases and other serious medical issues.
Taking her off the street, they made the two-hour drive back to the shelter.
After a long drive with her new friends, Helen was finally able to get looked at properly. The vet ran some tests and soon discovered something incredible and heartbreaking. Helen had been homeless for over 6 years.
Helen had been surviving on the streets for a long, long time.
For a dog, 6 years is most of your life. Living on the streets and barely surviving isn’t something you want to do for 6 years! Even more, the examination showed that Helen had a rare disease known as Anaplasmosis that is caused by tick bites.
Thankfully, the fighting spirit of the street-smart dog was able to get her through.
Now that she was healthy, the fun part began, finding her a home! Helen was put up for adoption after overcoming all her health issues. Soon, a lucky family came into the shelter and saw something in the little dog’s eyes.
After 6 years and a life of loneliness, it was finally time for Helen to go home.
Finally, Helen was adopted by a forever home and is currently living her best life! From a stray on the streets to a loving family, all because someone decided to call, even though it was a nuisance.
