It’s always a bit of an event when your pet is ready to give birth. But I doubt it was much of an event as this one.
A shelter dog was the center of quite the occasion when it was time to give birth to her litter of puppies.
A terrier in this Kentucky shelter had a huge litter of puppies inside her and was ready to give birth soon.
And this posed a bit of a challenge for the staff there. Dogs rarely carry that many puppies in them, and a lot can go wrong.
For the readers who’ve given birth before, think back to when you were pregnant and had difficulty moving. Can you imagine that but cranked up even more?
Yeah, I can hardly imagine it myself. Take one look at this momma dog’s stomach and you’ll be glad you only ever had to carry one or two children at a time.
There was no doubt about it now: this dog would need to give birth via C-section.
Thankfully, she was at the Kentucky Humane Society which boasts being one of the best places for animals to receive medical care.
One of the staff looking after her was Dr. Emily Bewley, who has an incredible track record when it comes to veterinary care.
A while back, she looked after a dog named Travolta who was on the verge of dying of malnourishment.
She and the rest of the staff made it possible for Travolta to make a full recovery, and Dr. Bewley eventually adopted him.
The terrier, who they named Momma Malone, had her womb overcrowded with puppies in an already overcrowded shelter.
Bewley said they would need “all hands on deck” to help her give birth via the scheduled C-section.
“On the way to the shelter, my son sat with her in the back of the car to comfort her.” said Dr. Bewley
The time finally came for her to deliver the puppies, and things went smoothly.
It took just 20 minutes!
Momma Malone was indeed carrying quite the litter inside her. It may not have been as easy without the amazing people at the Kentucky Humane Society.
She gave birth to a jaw-dropping 9 puppies.
That’s a whole pack right there!
And Momma Malone got her strength back pretty quickly.
Almost as if she didn’t have 9 whole puppies inside of her just 20 minutes earlier.
This was a surprise, though a pleasant one, to everyone at the shelter.
Dr. Bewley and other members of the staff were concerned that Momma Malone would have problems bonding and connecting with the puppies given the way she gave birth. But the terrier surprised everyone by being quite the first-time mom.
“When she woke up, she took to motherhood like she had done it before, even though I’m pretty sure this is her first time.” said Dr. Bewley
The puppies will stay at the shelter for a while until they’re old enough to be adopted.
In the meantime, we should all give Momma Malone a big congratulations on the delivery. She deserves it.
