Cesar Milan is called the dog whisperer for a reason. Nine whole seasons of Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan don’t lie. The man knows what he’s doing.
This call he got for a particular German Shepherd is one of the more interesting ones.
The dog whisperer responded to a call about an aggressive German shepherd named Ovechkin.
It’s normal for German Shepherds to go into defensive mode. That protective nature is in the breed’s DNA. The problem here was that Ovechkin isn’t protecting anyone important.
He’s just hostile because he wants to be. Try approaching within 10 feet of him and he’ll bark and snap instantly.
Cesar has to tell his camera crew to be careful. He can’t restrain the dog and protect the crew at the same time.
And a German Shepherd in biting mood is nothing to trifle with.
It’s not long before Cesar figures out why Ovechkin is like this. While Ovechkin is more aggressive than most dogs Cesar works with, it’s nothing Cesar hasn’t seen before.
This dog is overly territorial and thinks he’s the only one who gets to have boundaries.
It’s okay to have personal space, but Ovechkin wants the most personal space of anyone in the home. And when he doesn’t get it, he goes on the attack. This won’t do.
Cesar works his magic and knows the right psychological game to play with Ovechkin.
He backs Ovechkin into a corner, turns on a fan nearby on one side, and stands in front of the dog with a big stick. Now, Cesar has control of the space around Ovechkin. The fan’s noise, the corner, and the stick all tell the dog that it’s his turn to respect someone else now.
This was just the start, but it was working. Ovechkin was now learning his lesson.
Taking things a step further, Cesar had a bigger rehabilitation exercise planned. The location was the Dog Psychology center.
Ovechkin had a muzzle on for this trip.
Despite the progress Cesar made, he couldn’t really trust the dog without a muzzle just yet.
Cesar had to bring out food for this exercise – something a dog just can’t resist. This’ll be the ultimate test of self-control. And if Ovechkin fails the test, Cesar will make him do it again and again until he passes.
His crew helps him out for this one.
The first part has them stand in a circle and make sure Ovechkin doesn’t try to barge through. If he tries, give him a nudge with the leg and let him know that’s not allowed.
The second phase is more tricky. They crew members are given food containers for this exercise. Ovechkin will move around trying to plant his mouth on the food. Their job is to gently pull the food away and let him know it’s not his.
It’s a simple thing, but it’s something that’ll teach Ovechkin that he can’t just have whatever he wants.
The crew makes it work, but one crew member mistakenly pulls away too quickly. Cesar has to correct him, lest he risk being snapped at by the German shepherd.
Eventually, it all clicks for Ovechkin and he shows signs of learning the message. Cesar’s magic has worked once again, and Ovechkin is on his way to being a better dog than he was yesterday.
