Hopefully, you will never have to run into a deadly lion or a hungry bear. Those are unusual situations and, usually, uncommon. However, sometimes strange things do happen and it is always a good idea to be prepared for the absolute worst.
If you ever do find yourself to be facing a sassy kangaroo or an angry shark, you want to be prepared. That’s why we took it upon ourselves to find some of the best techniques and strategies for if you are ever put in that horrible situation.
Educate yourself now and you’ll feel like you’re ready to take on anything that life throws your way!
1. If you meet a lion…
Meet a lion and you will want to look into his eyes. Do not look away and do not turn your back — these are all things that will give the lion time to catch you off guard and attack.
2. Elephants are friendly! But…
Despite elephants being typically friendly animals, it is still smart to be aware and cautious. This is especially true if they think you are a threat to their cubs. A twisted trunk and ears pointing back means that the elephant is going to trample you.
3. Try this if you meet a lion
Come face-to-face with a lion? Try to make yourself look bigger. If you look bigger, chances are you’ll look more dangerous, and will decrease the chances of the predator wanting to attack.

4. Beware of the hippo
Hippos are believed to be friendly but, believe it or not, more people are killed by hippos than crocodiles. It is easy to anger them. Try not to go into the brushwoods if the weather is hot and your chances of running into them should go down.
5. What to do if you see a rhino
It is easy to frighten rhinos because their eyesight is bad. It’s hard to outrun rhinos because they can run at a very fast speed, but it is still possible. Also, the only real way to hide from a rhino is to hide behind a tree. It’s surprisingly a big obstacle for them (who would’ve thought!).
6. Being followed?
Sounds spooky!
No, but in all seriousness, if you are being followed by a snake, it is important that you stomp on the ground. The vibrations will distract the snake and hopefully send it elsewhere.
7. Another way to get away from a hippo
If you’re desperately trying to get a hippo away from you, try climbing a big tree or a big rock. Even a sharp hill can work. Wait at the top until the hippo leaves.
8. How to not attract sharks
Sharks actually have a very strong sense of smell. This means that if there is blood or urine in the water, they can smell it from far away. Avoid getting either of those things near you while you’re in the water and you have a smaller chance of attracting them.
9. If you do see a shark…
If you’re already passed that point and you find yourself face-to-face with a shark, it is not too late. It is crucial that you do not turn your back and try to get away quickly — this will make you look like prey. Instead, move slowly.
10. If a bull is running toward you…
Stand straight and still if a bull is running toward you. Use any piece of your clothing — shirt, hat, etc — as bait. When they get close enough, throw the clothing away and they will run after it.
11. See a gorilla?
Gorillas are known as kings of the jungle for a reason… But do not fret. Hopefully, if you are on their best behavior they will, hopefully, not attack. It’s good to make yourself appear smaller though. Whisper and avoid direct eye contact.
12. If a shark catches you
So you came face-to-face with a shark and didn’t get so lucky… It is attacking you! In this case, you need to aim for its eyes and gills, AKA it’s most sensitive spots.
13. Stay away from bees
Bees can be difficult, as they look out for their hive and will bite you simply for passing by. They tend to be attracted to dark colors. Avoid wearing a dark dress or shirt and your chances of being attacked by a bee will decrease.
14. Keep clear of kangaroos
Kangaroos aren’t always as fun and silly as they may seem. Enter their territory, and they will see you as a threat. However, a short cough can be seen as a sign of illness and ultimately keep them away.
15. If a swarm of bees is chasing you
This is everyone’s worst nightmare, huh? If it’s happening to you, though, hide in a dark place. The lack of light will distract the bees.
16. Another kangaroo pro tip
If you find yourself next to a kangaroo, move back slowly. This will make you appear smaller, thus less intimidating to the animal.
17. Stung by a jellyfish?
Immediately after you get stung, wash the sting with salt water (peeing on a jellyfish sting is a myth). Freshwater will worsen the burn. With a stick or tweezers, remove the rest of the tentacles leftover and apply an antihistamine cream.
18. Bitten by a snake?
If so, don’t suck the poison out of the bite — that is a myth and only something that works in movies. Instead, use tap water to wash the wound, fix a tourniquet and call rescue services!
19. Alligators or crocodiles
The jaws of both these animals are some of the strongest on the planet. Beware!
If you get caught, aim for the animal’s eyes and/or throat. These are their two most sensitive areas.
20. If you’re swimming and you see a crocodile
It is very important that you do not splash them. Also, don’t shout. This will only bring their attention to you. Instead, slowly and quietly swim away and get out of there fast!
We hope you are never put in any of these scary situations but, at the same time, it doesn’t hurt to prepare for the worst! We hope you feel a little bit more confident in your animal taming skills now and most importantly, stay safe!
