As Hurricane Irma prepared to approach her college town, Jessica Lewis was not about to abandon her dog… or miss class.
Lewis decided she would evacuate and head to her parents’ home near Atlanta.
Many of her classes were already being canceled in anticipation of the storm, however, she had one more class that she had to attend before she could leave. Lewis was pretty keen on getting out of town as soon as possible, so she was hoping to leave directly after her last class.

Bringing her dog to class would make that so much easier, but how would she convince her teacher to let her bring her dog to class?
Turns out all she needed to do was ask.

Here’s the email she sent her professor:
Dr. Kennedy,
My name is Jessica Lewis and I’m in your TR Intro to Political Science class at 3:30 p.m. I realize that the answer to this is probably no, but I thought that you might actually be a cool enough professor to say yes, and so I figured it was worth a shot.
Can I bring my dog to class today?
It would help me out SO much because your class is my last class of the day and I have to leave as soon as your class gets out to try to get home to Atlanta as soon as possible (trying my hardest to beat this storm traffic but your class is important to me so I don’t want to skip it) and it would prevent me having to go all the way back to my apartment to get her before I can get on the road.
I promise she’ll be good and only the teeniest bit disruptive. :) I’ve attached several pictures of her below to help convince you with her cuteness.
Thanks so much!!
Jessica Lewis

Jessica didn’t think she’d have any luck but, as she said, it was worth a try.
“I honestly did not think he would allow me to bring her,” she told The Tab. “It was completely on a whim – they canceled classes for the next day and I had to take Luna with me.”
She may have overestimated her power of persuasion, but she was clearly underestimating the cuteness of her dog because that’s pretty much the only reason her professor said yes.

“Did you think calling me ‘cool’ would get me to say yes? Because it won’t work. What will work is that SHE’S OBVIOUSLY A GOOD GIRL SO OF COURSE, YOU CAN BRING HER.”
So, Luna came to class with Lewis and, as promised, was only a teensy distraction.
“When students walked and saw Luna they were really excited about,” she said. “Someone shouted, ‘There’s a whole ass dog in here! She walked around and got pets from everybody and had a great time. She made a lot of friends.”

But overall, she was a “good girl” and very “well-behaved in class,” according to Lewis.
“She went straight to whoever was talking for the most part, like if someone was answering or asking a question,” Lewis told The Dodo. “The really funny part was that every time the professor stopped and asked if anyone had questions or comments, she whined loudly like she was responding. It was hilarious.”
Thanks to Lewis’ professor, she and her classmates had a fun school day and Lewis was able to get home in a timely manner.
