Bubba lives with his mom Amber Marienthal in San Jose, California. Marienthal adopted Bubba in 2009, and at first, she planned for him to be an indoor cat. But Bubba had other plans—he would stand at the front door and wail until his mom let him out. Marienthal quickly realized Bubba wasn’t happy spending all his time indoors, so she let him roam around the neighborhood.

Bubba started making a beeline to his neighborhood’s two local schools, Bret Harte Middle School and Leland High School. For some reason, Bubba loved curling up at a desk and listening to lectures on everything from English to math to science. The cat was eager to learn!

The teachers at these two schools quickly grew accustomed to having a feline student. They let Bubba wander in and out of their classrooms, and they didn’t even make him take pop quizzes. There was just one thing they couldn’t do: give Bubba treats.

“One teacher made the mistake of buying treats for him,” Marienthal told San Jose Mercury News. “Bubba would meow for treats. [The teacher] got sick of the noise.”

The students loved Bubba, and they even petitioned the school administrators to put up a statue of the cat. Their petition was denied, but the administrators did let them give Bubba his own Student ID.

Bubba makes his own rules, and everyone simply has to work around him. Once, he laid down in the middle of the high school’s soccer field and refused to move until the soccer players pet him. What Bubba wants, Bubba gets!

Bubba ‘started’ high school in 2013. And so, he officially finished his four years of high school in 2017. To celebrate, Leland High School gave Bubba his own graduation cap!

Even though Bubba is now officially a high school graduate, he doesn’t let that stop from hanging around the school. Now, he has a whole new generation of students to befriend.

“He waits for school to start, and he doesn’t come home until all the sports are done,” Marienthal says. “As long as he’s alive, I think he’ll hang out at the school.”
