He didn't hesitate for a second.

If there’s an animal that you associate with “mother and child,” it’s probably the deer.

(No thanks to Bambi and any number of nature programs you might have seen.)

But their media representation did get that part right. Mother deer can be pretty protective of their fawns.

When a deer fawn got stuck on the other side of this fence, you can imagine how scared both it and its mom got.

Deer can jump pretty high. With a good running start, they can clear a vertical space of 7-8 feet (that’s 2 to 2.4 meters!).

But a fawn’s legs are not long or strong enough for that.

It seems like its mom managed to jump over the fence and assumed the fawn was following close behind.

Mama seems to have forgotten that her fawn isn’t as big as her yet.

That spring in its step ain’t arriving for a few years. So how’s it going to get out?

It’s over here, and Mama’s over there. This fence isn’t gonna move.

Well, it’s lucky that people find deer cute.

A bystander saw the distressed fawn and immediately pieced together what was wrong.

What gave it away was the distressed body language that its mom was showing. Mama ran back and was standing on the road staring through the fence.

The bystander’s wife filmed the whole thing as it happened and caught the moment someone else joined in to help.

After a while, the husband managed to get the fawn safely in his arms.

Now it was time to carry it back to Mama.

The fawn was still scared of being held by a stranger.

Indeed, it squirmed and bleated the whole time the husband was carrying it. He’s trying to help you, little guy!

He set the fawn down when they sighted its Mama, and it beelined right for her. It was pretty cute, obviously.

“A happy ending” remarked the woman filming the video. It’s not every day you get to play rescuer to a baby deer!

Let’s hope it didn’t get attached and comes back looking for them.

That’d be pretty difficult now, wouldn’t it? Have Disney movies not taught us anything?

This pair is white-tailed deer, the most common deer species in America (and probably the world).

They’re right at home in the woodlands of places like Virginia and Texas.

They’re so abundant that zoologists have learned that they’ve actually diversified into dozens of subspecies.

Thanks to that same abundance, they also encounter humans a lot.

Plenty of deer wander into residential areas like this.

This mom and fawn were one of the luckier ones. Most other ones end up getting hit by cars or shot.

At least when this youngster grows up, they won’t have to worry about getting stuck behind fences again.

By then, it should be leaping as high as its mom.
