You can never really tell what your cat is thinking, so when it chooses to forego the warmth and comfort of your home in favor of hanging around outside, you let it.
The heart wants what the heart wants, and the SWAT Team at Boston Police Department wanted their beloved unofficial mascot to do as she pleased.
Affectionately dubbed “SWAT Cat,” this little calico cat swanned her way into officers’ hearts when she kept showing up around the Special Weapons and Tactics base in 2013.
She would show up during meal times for belly rubs and a bite to eat. The team knew she was a staple when in 2015 she went missing for nearly a month, prompting a SWAT team to use their website to post a lost pet notice on their website which in turn got the attention of local news.
They really love this cat. She did eventually come back (phew) and the happy officers vowed to keep a better eye on her.
However, despite their best efforts to tame the wild darling, she insisted on keeping her fancy-free outdoorsy lifestyle. SWAT Cat didn’t take to being indoors like they hoped. 15-year veteran Jamie Peitroski spent many hours after work crafting a kitten condo that would keep the department’s favorite feline safe and warm in the harsh winter climate.
Addressing some concerns that they should try to keep the cat indoors, a spokesperson for the department defended the SWAT Team:
“The men and women of the BPD SWAT Team have tried numerous tactics over the years to convince her to come in from the elements but she is set in her ways. They have built numerous shelters for her in the past – none more impressive than this one which is fully insulated and suits her independent lifestyle.”
The cat condo features a spacious interior, a wraparound deck to eat on, and glass windows to gaze out of. Looking at this swanky pad makes me wonder if I should see if some other SWAT teams would like to adopt me as their mascot.
It is nice to know that this cat will be comfortable for years to come, even if she does like living outside. The Boston Police Department will surely be taking care of their “SWAT Cat” for years to come – she is their mascot, after all.
