Dogs aren’t just man’s best friend, they can also be real lifesavers. There are countless stories of dogs saving lives and it just goes to show how loving and amazing they truly are! One dog in Virginia shows us that bravery isn’t just a human trait, but an animal one, too.
Charity Galloway had a close brush with tragedy a few days ago when her home caught fire.
Galloway was at home with her two kids when the unexpected happened. A lamp that was plugged into their dog’s shelter malfunctioned and sparked. Soon, the entire dog shelter was on fire and threatening to spread to the house. The shelter was less than five feet away from the Galloway home and could have very well been the end of the Galloway household.
Thankfully, Butter!
Butter is the family dog that was taken off the streets not too long ago. Ultimately, he was a stray that had taken a liking to the Galloway family and they had returned the love! Soon, he was an integral part of their family and living in a specially-built doghouse.
The lamp that Galloway had placed in his doghouse was a special heat lamp designed to keep Butter warm during the winter.
When the lamp caught fire, the doghouse had immediately gone up in flames. Since the fire was outside the home, the fire alarms didn’t go off, despite the glass windows shattering from the heat. The siding had started to melt on the house and it was mere moments away from engulfing the entire home in flames.
That’s when Butter decided to act.
“If it wasn’t for him, who knows what could’ve happened. It could’ve been way worse,” Golloway said. “I’m really grateful for that stray dog that wandered up into my yard.”
Butter ran over to his mom’s window and started barking relentlessly. He knew that if he could wake her up, she would be able to help. She was slow to get up, but the shattering glass of her windows sparked her to realize something was truly wrong.
By the time she had gotten up, the flames were really high.
“He knew something wasn’t right and that someone needed to know,” Golloway said. “He’s a smart dog.”
Running to her son, she was able to get him outside. With a garden hose in hand, he doused the flames and stopped the plastic siding from catching further. When the firefighters arrived on the scene, the situation had mostly been dealt with.
When Butter’s photo went on the news, his previous owners recognized him!
The Galloway family had thought he was a stray, but after being on the news for the fire rescue, his previous owners reached out and told them that his name wasn’t Butter, but Cooper! He had gotten lost and clearly ended up at a stranger’s house where they had taken him in.
It was a sad moment that they had to return Butter to his rightful owners, but he had clearly done what he needed to!
The firefighters explained that it would have been a much different situation if Butter/Cooper wasn’t there. Galloway promised to give him a big steak before he goes home!
“If wasn’t for that dog, that house would’ve been lit up all throughout the ceiling, and we would’ve been there for hours fighting that house,” Stidham said.
