A team of rescuers made a daring rescue when a mother dog digs herself out from the dirt.
A mother would do anything for her children. So when she felt that she could give her puppies a better chance at life, she tried her best to ask for help. With how she wagged her tail and how she jumped at the rescuers from the Arizona Humane Society, they could feel the urgency of the situation. But they still don’t know what she’s asking.
That is until she dug herself into a hole under a house.
The cramped passage is just a foot wide and three inches high. It couldn’t fit a small child but the dog slipped into the hole like she’s done it hundreds of times before. She disappeared behind a puff of dust for a quick second until a snout peeks out from the hole.
When the dog saw the rescuers, it quickly crawled out to greet them.
It looked like the same dog at first but when the mother dog emerged from the cramped passageway once more, that’s when they realized where these dogs were sleeping.
Dusty, dark, cramped – but it was a safe space from the otherwise dangerous world. But this hole is also unsafe. A structural collapse, a sudden gush of water, or a heavy blockage on the small passageway could mean life or death for her and her puppies.

The rescuers quickly went to work.
They shoveled the dirt out to make the hole a bit bigger but only by a few more inches. Any bigger and it might pose a danger to the building. All the while, they were comforting the mama dog to assure her that they’re going to get her puppies out safely.
One of the rescuers crawled under the building. It was as bad as they thought it would be. One part of the structures is even supported only by stacked materials.
After following the sound of soft yelping, the rescuers found a small nest of newly born puppies.
Fortunately, they are all very healthy. One of them even gave a big hearty yawn.
Using a gurney and some towels, they ferried the puppies out to safety. The mother dog couldn’t contain her happiness as she greeted her puppies with kisses. They were pulled out one by one until all of them were safely extracted.
They were rushed to the shelter where they underwent routine health checks.
They kept the mama dog close to her puppies all the time to assure her that they’re safe and together. Maybe in an expression of gratitude, the dog rested her chin on the lap of one of the rescuers.
It might be a long road to adoption, but for now, this family doesn’t need to cower in the dusty darkness.
The cramped place is behind them now and it’s all blankets and dog beds from here on. Thanks to these rescuers and a loving mother, these puppies are going to grow up safe and warm.
