In March 2019, a cattle dog appeared at Sima Bentley’s house in Sevier County, Tennessee.
The cattle dog was as sweet as could be, and he got along well with Sima’s toddler granddaughter, Aurora.
Sima posted a photo of the dog, who she named Oreo, on her Facebook page. Sima wasn’t sure if the dog was a stray or a runaway, and she wanted to do everything she could to find the pup’s rightful owner.
“He showed up at my house about a month ago and hasn’t left,” Sima wrote on Facebook. “I’ve talked to everyone within a mile from me and nobody knows this sweet guy.”
Oreo quickly settled into Sima’s house. He even got along with her pigs!
It turned out that there was a reason that Oreo appeared at Sima’s house. Because just a month after arriving at Sima’s house, he saved Aurora’s life.
Aurora was playing in her yard a couple weeks before her third birthday. Suddenly, a stray dog came down from the mountains behind her house and began growling at her.
Oreo immediately jumped in front of Aurora, and the dog attacked him instead. Sweet Oreo saved Aurora’s life!
“The Oreo dog, which is what they’ve nicknamed him, he ran across the yard and put himself in between Aurora and the other stray dog. The dog attacked him instead of attacking the baby,” Bentley told WATE TV.
Sima was amazed by Oreo’s heroism.
“The ‘what ifs’ could’ve been very bad. Very bad,” she said.
Sima rushed Oreo to an animal care center, where he received treatment for the wounds he had gotten from the other stray dog. Thankfully, none of the injuries were too serious.
Since Oreo was still listed as a stray, the animal care center put him up for adoption. But Sima knew that the dog belonged in her house.
“I always tell people that God shows up when you least expect it and for me, that was God putting an angel in our yard that day. I’m so grateful that we get to keep him,” Bentley said.
Sima adopted Bentley on Aurora’s third birthday. It was clear that this heroic dog belonged in her home.
“He’s going to be a very spoiled dog at this point. He’s going to go everywhere we go, he’s going to sleep in the house on a bed and whatever he wants, he’s going to get,” said Bentley.
Oreo is now recovering from his ordeal at Sima’s house. When Oreo is well enough, Sima says she plans to take him and Aurora on a fun hiking trip in the mountains.
Oreo is a sweet, loyal dog who did an incredible job at saving his new little sister from getting hurt. We’re so glad Oreo is in such a good home with people who love him so much!
