When a dog ran in front of their car one day, Maison White and her friend stopped to see if there was anything they could do.
One woman got out of the car and tried to beckon the dog closer, but it didn’t entirely trust her at first.
Still, she didn’t give up.
Making a friend
With a bit more cajoling, the pup eventually came over for a sniff and let the woman pet him.
They felt around for a collar or chip, but there didn’t seem to be any obvious way to immediately return the dog to its home – if it had one. Then they looked around and noticed there were no houses at all in the area – and they wondered if the pup was maybe thrown out of a car.
So Maison brought him back to her house until she could figure out what to do.
And boy was he grateful!
Making a home
The furry little guy clearly hadn’t been treated well during his short life up to that point. Maison noticed that he was scared to ever leave the house.
That made taking him for a walk quite a task.
Plying him with treats and getting him to play was tough as well. He had just never learned to be a dog.
But Madison knew that he just needed some time to learn how to feel safe – and that’s what she gave him.
Pupito
Now he goes by Pupito (Pito for short), and things are really looking up for him.
He’s even learned to accept love and affection – and give some back as well.
And it turns out Maison needed it. She had been understandably suffering from depression after being the victim of a sexual assault.
But Pupito came to her at just the right time and totally “flipped” her mood. Having a best buddy to do things with made a huge difference.
“Doing things with a best friend, it really changed how I view life,” she told The Dodo in an emotional video. “He’s just the best and ever since then, he’s just been by my side through everything.
These days, the pair get out of the house more than ever and Pupito loves playing!
Happily ever after
Maison had prayed to find happiness in the depths of depression and that’s precisely when Pupito came along – literally jumping right out in front of her when she least expected it.
Pupito is a big boy now, but that just means he can go on even more adventures. The pair loves to hike and Pito enjoys pulling Maison on her longboard.

Needless to say, viewers were touched by the video from the pair telling their story.
“This person thought she was saving a puppy’s life but in the end, the puppy saved her life. The way Pupito looks at his mom melts your heart!” said one YouTube commenter.
We think this viewer summed it up perfectly:
“Wonderful! Two hurting souls coming together to be best friends and lifting each other up! How beautiful.”
