A rare story of hope took place in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada.

One cold day in November, a passerby saw a stray dog all curled up on the side of the street. She stopped to check if the dog was okay.

But the dog was hiding something.

The woman was shocked to find the dog protecting a litter because it most certainly wasn’t the dog’s.

The pup was hiding a litter of kittens.

The dog was shielding them from the cold weather and keeping them warm with its body.

They alerted the nearby Pet and Wildlife Rescue shelter so the animals will be saved from the freezing streets.

Shelter staff named the dog Serenity.

The question of whether the dog and kittens were already acquainted before they were found was still unclear.

But one thing is for sure, Serenity helped those cute kittens go by every day.

While at the shelter, the staff saw how incredible the bond was between Serenity and the kittens, hinting that they may’ve already been together for some time.

“It’s truly heartwarming,” said one staff when interviewed by one of the media outlets. “It had been a very cold night so these kittens would have had a very hard time surviving,” they added.

They were immediately taken care of and treated for flea and worm infections.

What’s more amazing, Serenity insisted on overseeing her adopted kittens and their progress in the shelter.

Staff ensured she had regular visits.

“Our staff sees many difficult situations on a daily basis and stories like this one make every heartache worth it,” shared another shelter staff.

The pup’s bravery had made rounds on social media and went viral not just in Canada, but to the world. And this good deed got rewarded soon after.

After her rescue, Serenity was adopted!

The shelter received lots of applications to adopt Serenity.

In one of their updates on Facebook, they posted, “Today we said a sweet farewell to our worldwide famous pup, Serenity. Her story touched the hearts of people all over the world.”

The shelter further quoted in the post, “Today she has achieved the goal of every shelter dog: to be adopted into her very own family who will love, care for and spoil her for the rest of her life.”

The shelter also hoped that the dog’s story has inspired more people to go to shelters and kennels to adopt animals looking for their forever home.

They all deserve second chances.

The kittens were still being nurtured at the shelter at the time when Serenity, now named Murphy, was adopted.

They were still too young so a little more time was needed for them to be ready, and eventually, adopted.
