Being a stray dog doesn’t automatically mean you’re aggressive.
In fact, in Georgia, a stray dog became a very important part of the community. It was a community he deeply loves so much so that he brought a responsibility upon himself – to take care of the kids.
Every morning, especially when the roads are busy with commuters walking from one place to another, one would hear a series of loud barks.
Kupata is a stray dog.
Every morning, he herds children through the pedestrian lane and helps them cross the road. As a group of kids moves through the street, Kupata is quick to position himself between the kids and the cars.
He does so religiously too because if a car or any vehicle crosses the pedestrian line, they will experience Kupata’s ire. He would run after the car while barking at it or he will stand in front of it and bark.
Even if you move just a bit, once your bumper crosses the zebra line, you’ll definitely hear an earful from the trusty safety dog.
According to one of the people who take care of Kupata, he takes his job very seriously.
“I’m sure that he thinks that taking care of the children and taking care of our street is his job.” Tamta, one of Kupata’s neighbors, shared with The Dodo.
He even sports a very serious look whenever he’s out with the children. It’s a job with no days off as well. They said that looking after the children is something he does every single day. He doesn’t even go to other streets. He just stays in his, where the kids are crossing the road frequently.
Tamta shared that the neighbor loves Kupata and Kupata loves the neighborhood too.
They noticed his protective behavior a couple of years back and then decided to take a video of him a month ago. Kupata, then, became viral.
Beqa, the man who took the video, wanted to show the world that stray animals are not as aggressive as people think.
He wanted to show that they are capable of protection and affection, much like Kupata and the kids.
They also admitted that Kupata is one of the “lucky ones”.
Because of Kupata’s nature, his neighbors took it upon themselves to take care of him. They feed him frequently which is why he was named Kupata. “Kupata” means “sausage”, and they named him so because he’s fat.
Nona, an old woman in their neighborhood is Kupata’s main caretaker. This is where he sleeps and hangs out when he’s not guiding neighborhood kids.
Kupata’s neighbors hope that Kupata’s story raises awareness about stray dogs.
They want to show that they are smart and affectionate and that they are worthy of love as well. Tamta shared that Kupata was the exception to the rule because he has a whole community looking after him. Others simply don’t have that luxury.
“Kupata shows us that even dogs can be very responsible and very loyal because of he takes care of children every day.” Tamta said. “I’m sure that he’ll do this his whole life!”
