Cats are quite clever creatures. They can be sneaky and sly, too, accomplishing feats that stun their owners.

They will creep up on food left out on the counter and try to steal it away for noshing on in a secret snacking fest. Felines snuggle into the dog’s bed and command it, warning away the dog with a mere glance that frightens even the toughest pooch.

They swipe the weirdest things from their owners in the dark of night or when your back is turned for a second, things like hair ties and socks. And despite them being exceptionally independent animals, they still love human affection in the form of a good chin and behind-the-ear scratch.

Stray cats survive on the streets by fending for themselves, foraging for scraps and scampering after mice and other rodents. But those who aren’t so lucky end up starving.

Miraculously, some stray cats are scooped up and cared for a shelter where staff and volunteers try to pair them with an adoptive family. But sadly, many live out their entire lives on the streets.

In a setting like that, they find themselves without nine lives all too soon. But not one precocious cat.

When 33-year-old school teacher Tania Lizbeth Santos Coy Tova spied a dingy white tailless cat in Mexico, she recognized the scrappy kitty was a stray. It was clearly hungry, but friendly, too.

She approached the cat sitting on the sidewalk outside her local supermarket in Piedras Negras, Mexico. The cat takes one look at Tania and apparently decided that she was going to be its human.

The cat allows Tania to pet it oh so gently, then when she stands up and begins to walk toward the store’s entrance, it follows her! When she pulls open the door, the cat skirts right through and heads to its favorite section.

You can hear Tania laughing as she follows the cat who makes a beeline straight for the cat food display. As she reaches for a blue packet of food, the cat stretches up and seemingly points right to it as if to confirm her selection. Tania giggles at his boldness.

She made sure he was fed, then headed home. The next time she popped by the store, there he was, sitting actually on the shelf of cat food, just waiting for a cat lover like her to help him out.

After inquiring about the cat’s presence, Tania learned from store employees that the cat walks into the store every day hoping someone will purchase him treats. After he snacks, he jets off and no one knows where to.

Apparently Tania was so enamored by the friendly stray that she decided to take him home with her one time. She named him Conejo, which means “rabbit,” because he doesn’t have a tail.

“After being rescued from the street, I move to a better life, the human I chose made me go into a store and buy me my food fav, well because I accompanied her home, I think she needed my help in many things, now me mima lot, I have home and I hope that many animals who were in the same situation that I can find affection and love of more humans, because we all deserve to live happily.”

Before she took Rabbit home, however, she followed him stealthily to see if he had a real home. She discovered that he truly was a stray who hunkered down alone along the roadside. It broke her heart.

“After seeing him all the time in those conditions and seeing that he was homeless, the decision was made to stay in our house. I had no idea how to treat or care for a cat but I have given to the task of ask or read cat things to be able to take care of him, I had to completely change habits where only was my comfort to give him space, spread my time and I think I became a little more effective and finally a little more responsible, I even get up early!! Lol and every time I have to go out I worry like I’m a kid!! I think not only he’s had a before and after….”

So when Rabbit arrived at her home, he was more than ready to settle in. Tania made sure to have Rabbit checked out by a vet and bought him a new toy named Rene.

Now that he’s found a permanent home with Tania, he can spend the rest of his years lounging at his new pad with a full belly, content and comfortable.

“Let me tell you that before Rabbit was very handsome in the photos, we had to first heal many wounds he had. We do not know if it was due to mistreatment by people or simply because he was in fights with other street animals. He allowed himself to be touched and carried, but his countenance was very sad and fearful all the time, even before he came to our house. We didn’t have any animals, but I think he taught us a great lesson that we must show respect, love and empathy towards other beings.”

The store’s employees even thanked Tania for informally adopting Rabbit and welcome him into her home.

“They told me that no one had come looking for him. They thanked me for taking him home.”

When Tania heads into the store, she always makes sure to pick up Rabbit’s favorite treats, the very snack that brought these two together.
“People have the ability to make big changes, we all deserve a chance to live as best as possible and if you can support or serve others, both animals, more people, the atmosphere, also helps oneself. We all need everyone and none is less important!!”
