Michael Shinkle and his son are huge fans of camping together. They’ll often spend the weekend at primitive campgrounds near their home of Tallahassee, Florida. One weekend in 2017, they went on a fishing trip together.
While they were at the campground, they met a friendly stray cat.
Michael’s son and the cat immediately started bonding—the little boy enjoyed petting the cat, and the cat purred and rubbed against him. The cat was skinny, and Michael wanted to give her some food, but they didn’t bring much with them. And so, Michael and his son got to working fishing, hoping they could catch enough to feed the cat.
Michael and his son didn’t have any luck catching fish, and so they started feeding the cat some of their bread. The cat was grateful to have a bite to eat.
Later, after Michael and his son ate dinner, they gave the cat their leftovers. The cat ate the food and then disappeared into the night. Once the cat left, Michael and his son settled into their tent and went to sleep.
A couple of hours later, Michael woke up when he heard noises outside the tent. He went to investigate and was shocked to see eight glowing eyes staring back at him. Once Michael’s eyes adjusted, he realized the eyes belonged to the mama cat and three kittens.
Michael was shocked to learn the cat had kittens. He was also amazed that she trusted him enough to bring out her kittens. When Michael went back into his tent, he had already decided he was going to take the cat and kittens home with him.
The next morning, Michael and his son caught a ton of fish, including a couple catfish and 13 bluegills. The cats ate until they were stuffed!
After that, Michael, his son, and their four new cats headed home.
Michael set up a nice home for the cat and her kittens on his back porch, and the cats were very happy with the arrangement.
Michael took the mama cat to the vet, where she was given worm medication. Soon after that, she began gaining weight. There was just one problem with the mama cat: she was very food aggressive.
“We decided as a family after she was fixed that we would try to adopt her out since we have a 6 month old baby and 2 other kids that love to love things and we did not want any serious accidents to take place,” Michael wrote on Imgur.
A family friend reached out to Michael and said she would adopt the cat mom and one of her kittens. And so,the mom and kitten went off to her wonderful new forever home.
The other two kittens settled into life in Michael’s house. Michael moved them indoors, and they quickly found their favorite spots in the house. They also got along well with Michael’s other cat, ClownBoy.
Michael and his son performed a great act of kindness when they rescued this mama cat and her kittens. We’re so glad these four cats have all found such great homes!
