When Becca Brown’s husband, a US Air Force, was deployed in Germany back in 2018, the family of five knew that they would have to move to Europe, but they could not take their dog with them.

Piper, a blue heeler and labrador mix, who was only three years old at the time, absolutely loved her family and her humans adored her, too, but they knew they would have to leave her behind.

And, as much as they wanted to take Piper back when they returned, they didn’t want to put the dog’s new family in a situation in which they would take the dog from them, thus making them sad.

“It didn’t necessarily have to be temporary,” Becca told the Pensacola News Journal. “We didn’t want someone to get attached to her and then have us take her away three years later.”

So, they arranged for Piper to move with a man in Kansas, with whom she seemed to get along with really well.

The man kept sending them updates on his relationship with Piper, and the family was sure their dog was having a great time with her new owner.

So, we can all imagine their shock when they were called by a vet’s office in Oklahoma telling them that Piper had been found in the streets.

“We were mostly shocked,” Becca said. “We were just kind of like, ‘Oh. Wow. This was not anything we would have expected. Last we heard, they were doing great… We didn’t expect this.”

You see, a month earlier, Carla Olmstead’s son had found the dog in the street, she had jumped into his car and refused to get out.

The Olmstead family fell in love with the dog immediately, and Piper seemed to get along very well with everyone in the family, including cats and dogs.

“She is the sweetest and most polite dog we’ve ever been around. She was gentle with our cats and our dog. She loves people,” Olmstead wrote in a Facebook post.

That’s how they concluded that Piper must have belonged to someone who loved her and had trained her well.

They realized she had a chip and tried to contact the owner, but they had no luck the first time. When they tried again a couple of weeks later, they found out about Piper’s background story with the Browns.

The Brown family was super excited to be reunited with their old dog, and the Olmstead family was happy to go on a beach trip to Florida in order to return Piper to her previous owners, who now live in Pensacola.

Olmstead posted updates about Piper’s journey to reunite with the Browns, and she also uploaded a video of the dog meeting her old owners again. The family has a set of triplets – so there would be lots of playtime!

While she was shy at first and missed the people who had found her, she got used to her new old life day after day, and she got to be happy again!
