One man was swimming in Emily Bay off Norfolk Island, Australia when he lost his most precious piece of jewelry.

Nathan Reeves and his wife, Suzie Quintal, were visiting family in Norfolk Island during the Christmas holiday season when they decided to visit the beach.

Suzie told Nathan to take off his wedding ring before he went into the water, but the man either forgot or just plain didn’t listen.

After spending some time in the water he realized his wife had been right, he had lost his wedding ring!

The ring slipped off his finger while swimming and, though he searched, he couldn’t find it anywhere.

Nathan had to eat a slice of humble pie when he went back to his wife to tell her what had happened.

Not only had Nathan lost the ring, but he did so 1 day before the couples second wedding anniversary.

The pair were heartbroken, but they soon had to leave the island and return back to their home on the Gold Coast.

Before they did so, however, they posted about the lost ring and asked people to keep an eye out for it.

The islands residents did more than just ‘keep an eye out’, the locals made serious search efforts, even bringing in the use of metal detectors.

It was no use though, the ring seemed to be gone forever.

But then, 5 months later, a woman was snorkeling around the reef when she spotted something rather odd.

A small mullet fish had something shiny wrapped around it and, upon closer inspection, the snorkeler realized it was a wedding band.

The woman, who also runs a website about the island, realized she knew who the ring belonged to and she managed to snap a few pictures before the fish swam away.

She found the couple on Facebook and shared the incredible news with them.

The ring had been found… sort of, it was still wrapped around the body of the fish.

The community realized that the only way to get the ring back would be to catch the fish and then carefully remove it.

This was easier said than done though, there are thousands of mullet fish swimming in the waters of Emily Bay.

They knew that they would have to find the fish soon, otherwise the ring would begin to cut into it as the fish grew.

Locals from all over the area are determined to catch the fish and rescue the wedding band, even the glass bottom tour boats are keeping an eye out.

While the fish and the ring have yet to be found, it is only a matter of time before Nathan gets his wedding ring back, and the fish can go on to lead a normal fishy life.
