We have all seen dogs do a lot of crazy things on the internet. Some can do some incredible tricks, such as fetching, rolling over, or jumping through hoops; others can jump really high or walk on two paws. Other dogs are just very good-looking pups, and others will hold a tower of dog treats on their nose without moving an inch.
But have you ever seen a dog smiling?
This trick is definitely out of the ordinary and one that left the whole family in laughter. The dog was seen smiling and grinning as soon as the owners tell him to smile. This hilarious grin he had on his face left the internet laughing hysterically. We are all glad that this funny moment was recorded on video, or we would have never been able to appreciate the smirk on the dog’s face.

But what does it mean for a dog to smile?
It might be funny to watch, but smiling dogs can mean a variety of different things! The dog on the video is obviously not doing it for any bad reasons; on the contrary, the pup is proudly trying to show off a cool trick that his owners had taught him.
Smiling can sometimes also be seen as a form of submission.
A dog that smiles usually wants to show that it pleases the hierarchy of the pack or family. He can smile at a human master or another canine. A dog that is confident or considers itself to be an alpha dog will not smile very often. This type of dog believes that it doesn’t have any need to signal its deference and, therefore, will not submit by smiling. Smiling, therefore, is more typical of submissive dogs or of dogs who accept their subordinate position.
Another form of smiling can be attributed to aggressiveness, and it is usually accompanied by growling and a slightly opened mouth. The latter comes into place so that the dog can bite fast if it is provoked any further. When this is the case, it is a good signal that the dog wants you to leave as soon as possible.
For others, just like the dog in the video, the smiling might be the result of an astute observation.
The dog has been trained to smile, and knows that he will most likely get a favorable return from doing this gesture, such as a treat or a belly rub. The dog is, therefore, encouraged to smile as he looks forward to the positive attention. His smile may become genuine over time, because he ends up associating this expression or gesture with something that will make him very happy.
