Carla Reilly Moore was surprised when she received a call from a local veterinarian about a sick Siamese cat.
Moore is the founder of Ontario-based rescue group Happy Tails Farm Sanctuary, and she typically takes in abused farm animals. She doesn’t usually look after domestic animals like cats and dogs. But when Moore saw a photo of the cat, her heart melted, and she knew she had to help this little creature.
The cat, Sapphire, was in bad shape. She had a broken pelvis, a bad limp, and her eyes were crusted over and infected. She also didn’t have a microchip, leading rescuers to believe she was a stray.
Moore picked up the cat from the veterinarian and brought her home. For the first 24 hours, Sapphire hid under the couch, avoiding Moore, her husband, and their one-month-old baby Mary.
After 24 hours, Sapphire seemed to realize the family wanted to help her. She crawled into bed with Moore and her husband, and after that, she didn’t leave their side!
“Sapphire has a long road ahead of her. There’s lots of healing to be done…We know that she’ll have special needs for the rest of her life, and that’s why she is staying with us. Because when an animal crosses your path there’s a reason. She needed us. And we are here for her,” Moore wrote on Facebook.
Over the next few weeks, Sapphire grew more and more comfortable in her new home. While Sapphire loved spending time with her parents, she had the strongest bond with little Mary.
Moore was shocked to see how much Sapphire loved her baby. Sapphire quickly began spending most of her time in Mary’s crib. She also tried to protect the baby—when Moore’s dog walked by, Sapphire would quickly jump into the crib and stand over Mary.
Sapphire also loves napping with Mary—she’ll often curl up on top of her or next to her.
“When Mary was just a few weeks old Sapphire came into our life. This poor kitty was brought to us as a stray with several serious health concerns,” Moore said. “Almost immediately she bonded with our baby daughter. Somehow their souls just seemed to connect. Sapphire is at the point now where she ‘protects’ Mary and even mimics nursing her. It really needs to be seen to be believed!”
Mary is now four months old, and she has begun reciprocating Sapphire’s love.
Mary will often reach out and pet Sapphire when they’re in the crib together. Whenever Moore asks Mary where ‘kitty’ is, Mary will immediately look at Sapphire. It’s clear these two have an incredible, unbreakable bond!
Sapphire has found a truly wonderful family who loves her more than anything, and she’s also found her soulmate in a sweet little girl. Sapphire had a rough start to life, but now, she’s doing great!
