A six-year-old girl named Cara Bideau proved that heroes come in all shapes and sizes when she selflessly rescued an abused dog.

Cara was out playing near her family’s home in Londonderry, North Ireland when she heard a weird noise. She looked around, trying to find where the noise was coming from. Finally, she found the source: an animal trapped in a pit.

The pit was covered by a pile of wood pallets and rocks. Using all her strength, Cara moved the rocks and wood. When she saw what underneath the bottom of the pile, she was shocked.

It was a skinny, scared Boxer.

Cara ran home and told her dad, Kenny, that a dog fell in a hole and needed their help. Cara led Kenny back to the hole, and he was sickened by what he saw. He didn’t tell Cara, but it was clear to him that someone had deliberately put this poor dog in the pit. This cruel person was trying to starve the dog to death.

In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, Kenny explained what happened when he found the dog:

“I was even more shocked when I freed the dog to see how her ribs were sticking out, so it had been quite a while since she had eaten, and then to top it off, we found out she was blind. It is beyond my understanding how anyone could be this callous.”

Cara gave the dog a name, Bella. Kenny and Cara took Bella home and fed her a tin of dog food. The pup was so hungry, she ate the whole tin in fifteen seconds flat. Kenny decided to keep Bella overnight; he wanted her to have a warm place to sleep after her ordeal. The kindhearted family of animal lovers made sure that the pup was happy and safe—Kenny’s son Ethan even slept on the couch next to Bella.

The next day, they contacted the Rainbow Rehoming Centre, a non-profit that’s dedicated to finding good homes for dogs. The Rainbow Centre took Bella to the vet, where they learned more about her past.

“The vet has found evidence that this dog was bred and bred and bred until she could no longer produce pups,” Helen Davies, the founder of the Rainbow Centre, told the Belfast Telegraph. “She is emaciated so we can only guess how long she had been left in this concrete grave and left to starve to death.”

Rainbow Centre also thinks that Bella’s teeth were damaged because her former owner had kept her chained up for long periods of time. Poor Bella had tried to bite through the metal chain, but she wasn’t able to get free.

Thanks to Cara’s heroic act, Bella’s life turned around completely.

Rainbow Rehoming Centre found Bella a great foster home. Soon after that, they found her an equally wonderful forever home. In her new home, she can run and play as much as she wants. She also has a big brother, Sunny, who acts as a seeing eye dog for her.
