For many of us, our pets are at the core of our hearts. We love them just as much as any human and couldn’t bear the thought of them coming to harm or injury. Many dogs are in shelters, however, and don’t have the luxury of having a human who personally cares about them.
Lou, the dog, was in a shelter when something went horribly wrong.
Lou is a puppy who, like most young dogs, was full of life! It’s impossible to keep in your laughs when you have puppies running around. They are always the life of the party! For Lou, shelter life was tough, but he was happy, regardless.
Randomly, Lou stopped eating and moving.
When the happy-go-lucky pup stopped responding to the food he was given and wouldn’t move around anymore; the shelter knew something was wrong. Vet Ranch, an organization devoted to helping homeless animals, decided to take him in to help.
When they took Lou in, he looked pitiful.
Wrapped in blankets with tubes all coming out of him, the poor dog was in a sorry state. Eventually, we are able to find out what the problem is as Dr. Judd starts explaining the details. Looking at the symptoms, they are pretty sure its parvovirus.
The first thing they do is get Lou set up with a catheter and some injections.
Poor Lou looks pitiful as they begin working on his little body. His body temperature was low, and he was wrapped in a blanket and warming bags the whole time. In a horrible but necessary picture, we see all the needles and vials surrounding the little dog.
Right when they gave him the fluids, little Lou lifts his head for the first time.
Lou has some fight in him! With some positive data about his blood glucose, they are happy to see him start improving. Finally, the little dog takes some food for the first time! Parvovirus is really terrible and has a 91% mortality rate without treatment.
As a special treat, Lou could go home with a friend in hopes he would eat a little more!
Going home to meet some friends, Lou started eating some chicken! The signs just kept getting better as we see life and vitality returning to the cute dog.
Gaining weight, it was time to get the vaccines he should have had from the beginning.
Since he looked so much better, the doctors felt better about moving forward with the rest of the treatment that Lou needed. After a few more days, Lou was almost all ready to go back, vaccinations and all!
In a final video, we see Lou with his old friends and finally went to a forever home.
The best ending to a story like this is when the dog gets adopted. For Lou, the foster family couldn’t bear to return him and finally kept the little dog! From a near-death experience to a loving family, Lou made quite the trip.
