While certain animals are born to be in natural competition with one another, sometimes special circumstances are able to override basic biology. Generally speaking, these are situations where nurture has overtaken nature and unusual bonds have formed. That was certainly the case for these three unlikely pals in a story out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The adorable animals in question are Jack the cat, Sasha the dog and Tweaks the rat. Although in most situations a cat, dog and rat wouldn’t be able to share a room together, these three have become interdependent and basically inseparable. It all started at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society when they were dropped off at the shelter by their owner, someone who seemingly couldn’t care for them anymore. As they all came in together and presumably grew up together, the staff quickly took notice of the close friendship between the trio. During their initial health screenings, each of the animals became nervous and skittish when separated from the other two. The bond was close enough that staff members began calling the group “The Rat Pack.”

As if this story wasn’t cute enough already, the three animals have unique relationships with one another and have found ways to help each other out as well. Because Jack doesn’t have the best eyesight, Sasha helps steer him around and acts like a big brother to him. On the other hand, Tweaks is the oldest one of the group but in some ways acts like the youngest. Of the three amigos, he is the cuddliest and loves to show his friends affection.

Because the staff members knew these pets were so closely connected, they were conscious of that when considering potential adoption candidates. Fortunately, a suitable person was found and these three best friends will never have to be separated. “The Rat Pack has left the building!” wrote the Oshkosh Area Humane Society on their Facebook page. “We’re very grateful to their new family for adopting them so they can start a new chapter in their lives – TOGETHER!”

Though stories about cute animals are inherently heartwarming, this one is extra special. Despite our expectations, these three were able to overcome their natural differences and become the best of friends. If we can learn anything from Tweaks, Jack and Sasha, it’s that mutual love and respect can overcome even the deepest differences. Wherever they are now, we hope these little guys are enjoying their new home!
