Ellie is a one-year-old pit bull who’s as sweet as can be.

Ellie’s first owners adopted her when she was a tiny puppy. But unfortunately, after Ellie grew from a puppy into an adult dog, her owners felt she “wasn’t cute anymore.” And so, they surrendered her to a high-kill shelter in Jackson, Tennessee.

Nobody put in an adoption application for Ellie, and so the shelter decided to add her to the euthanasia list. Ellie was out of time, and it seemed like she somehow realized that.

The day before she was supposed to be put down, Jon Patel visited the shelter. And when he reached Ellie’s kennel, she reached her paw towards him.

“She was just sitting there very calmly while the other dogs were barking their heads off,” Jon Patel told The Dodo. “So I went over to her cage, and she stuck her little paw out, and when I reached my hand down, she stuck her little paw out through the cage, and I grabbed it.”

Jon immediately knew he wanted to adopt Ellie.

He called his wife Kayla and told her about the dog, and she agreed to adopt her. Jon talked to the shelter and made arrangements to pick Ellie up the following Monday, the earliest day he could get her.

“They said that if we didn’t come Monday, they would have to put her down,” Jon said. “She’s only a year old, and if they put her down, it would have been such a waste of life.”

Jon and Kayla went on Monday and got Ellie. They brought her home, and she immediately started bonding with her new owners. Ellie was as sweet as could be, and she loved spending time with her new parents.

“To this day, I don’t understand why anyone would give her up because she’s so sweet and loving,” Kayla says. “She’s never met a person or a tennis ball that she doesn’t love immediately.”

Ellie is happiest when she’s spending time with her parents, who she loves more than anything in the world.

“She won’t let you out of her sight — ever,” Kayla said. “Even if you creep out of the room … she’s coming after you because she wants to keep her eye on you. I think she just loves us and she wants to be near us all the time.”

Kayla and Jon have noticed that people often react negatively to Ellie because of her breed.

Sometimes, people will walk across the street to avoid walking next to her, or they’ll mutter about how dangerous she looks. But Ellie wouldn’t hurt a fly—she loves everyone and everything. Jon and Kayla hope that if they share her story, it will help show people why pit bulls make such good pets.

Jon wasn’t planning on adopting a dog the day he visited the shelter, but he’s never regretted his spur-of-the-moment decision. Ellie is a wonderful addition to Jon and Kayla’s family—these three are as happy as can be!
