Maggie is an Australian shepherd cross who heard the cries of two rescue puppies while she was staying at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in Alberta, Canada.
The dog’s motherly instincts kicked in. She knew the pups were scared to be alone their first night at the pet motel.
Maggie herself was recently adopted from the Edmonton Humane Society. Her puppies were weaned from her around two weeks before that evening.
The female dog had been at Barker’s for over a week when the pair of nine-week-old puppies were brought in by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS).
The pet motel often takes dogs from AARCS and Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) when they don’t have foster homes available.
Sandi Aldred is the owner of Barker’s. She and her family were headed out for the evening after the pups were settled in.
Sandi checked in on the pet motel using her phone. She went to the live feed from the surveillance cameras and saw something strange.
Maggie was in her kennel when they left but was now sitting in the hallway outside of the new pups’ pen. She was trying to get as close as possible to the lonely pups.
Sandi and her family watched the footage and saw Maggie move the water dish built in her kennel’s door. That gave her enough space to wiggle out.
Sandi narrated the incident,
“We watched her on the surveillance cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging. And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her.”
Sandi returned after dinner and was greeted by an excited Maggie.
“She came to me and she was really happy, and then she took me back to their room, as if to say, ‘I really need to meet these puppies.’“ she said.
Sandi let Maggie meet the puppies.
Maggie and the puppies soon cuddled so Sandi let them stay together that night since they were so comfortable.
Maggie’s owners arrived the next day to pick her up. Sandi told them what happened. Maggie’s owners weren’t even surprised.
Sandi then asked them if Maggie could stay with the puppies for a few more days. But her owners missed their dog too much to grant her request.
“They said, ‘Well, we’ve only had her for a little while so …’ They kind of wanted her back, obviously,” Sandi said.
So the staff at Barker’s decided to give the pups extra love after Maggie left. They’d take the pups home in the evenings so they could experience a real home.
Maggie and the puppies have since found their forever homes. This wonderful story from 2016 just proves how wonderful and loving all mothers are.
