Dogs don’t tend to hide their emotions.
Most of the time, you know when they’re happy or when they’re upset. But sometimes, you come across a dog who’s surprisingly stoic.
A dog groomer based in Canada had one tricky client who seemed committed to being serious the whole time.
But things took a hilarious turn when she brought out the hairdryer.
“Girl With The Dogs” documented her experience giving a bath to the Akita named Kuma.
Girl With The Dogs is the name of her YouTube page. In real life, her name is Vanessa and she is a professional pet groomer.
She has all sorts of videos showcasing her experiences grooming different breeds of dogs.
Most of the time, the pups are outgoing and joyful, or at least they show a lot of emotion.
This Akita, however, spends most of his grooming session with quite a serious face. His name is Kuma and it’s hysterical to watch a dog be so stoic for so long.
Akitas were bred to be aggressive dogs.
Originally these dogs were used for hunting and fighting. In Japan, they serve as a symbol of health, long lifespan, and happiness.
Because of this, Akitas were also meant to be able to protect the family and their owners well.
Of course, they aren’t actually any more dangerous than other dogs – it all depends on how they’re raised.
That being said, his breed could be an explanation for why Kuma shows such little emotion for most of this video.
Vanessa, the woman behind the YouTube channel, Girl With The Dogs, was unsure how this Akita would like his bath.
Kuma has a naturally serious face, so he certainly wasn’t smiling during the experience. And Vanessa noted how Kuma seemed to be feeling at the time:
“As I rinsed Kuma down, he stares at me like a disappointed father after parent-teacher interviews.”
Vanessa points out that Akitas are known for not emoting, which can make it a challenge when she tries to provide a comfortable cleaning experience for him.
But Kuma changed demeanor quickly at one crucial point.
But Kuma’s expressionlessness changed when the blow dryer came out.
As soon as the bathing part of the bath ends, Vanessa begins to dry Kuma’s fur.
Turns out, he loves it! While Vanessa dries off his coat, he begins to show the classic signs of a happy pup.
First, Kuma’s hind feet start shaking like he’s being tickled. At some points, he even leans into the blow dryer to get a more intense feeling.
Although Kuma doesn’t wag his tail like a typical happy dog, this is the first time all bath that he’s had an iota of expression.
It’s pretty great to see his expression change so quickly and so strongly just because of a blow dryer.
It’s hilarious to see how a bath can bring out some emotion in this typically reserved dog!
The comments on this video are filled with people getting in on the joke and riffing off of Kuma’s serious side. One person writes:
“Kuma looks like the kind of dog that tells you to sit.”
Someone else said:
“List of Kuma’s visible emotions: 1. Blowdry bliss 2. Stoic confidence [end of list]”
It’s adorable to see this pup’s sudden burst of emotions. What a cute dog.
