When security guard Michael came across a cat while on the job, he was glad to have some company while keeping an eye on things.

“I was at work and just doing my normal patrolling activities,” Michael told The Dodo. “She kept following me. I fell in love with that cat.”

Something about the cat, who he named “Tree Kitty,” made him smile all the time.

So, one day, Michael decided to bring the cat home with him.

“It was just a relief knowing the cat was finally inside the house,” Michael said.

But once Tree Kitty arrived, Michael and Alexandra noticed that she started going through some changes.

Alexandra thought she must have been feeding Tree Kitty well because the cat’s belly was becoming bulbous.

During a visit to the vet, Alexandra learned exactly why Tree Kitty’s belly was getting so big.

She was pregnant with what looked like three kitties.

Alexandra and Michael were completely taken by surprise.

Thankfully Tree Kitty and the babies in her belly were healthy.

“The first thought was, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to have to find homes for all these kittens,'” Michael said.

The couple runs a nocturnal sanctuary for animals like genets and kinkajous, but they had never handled a pregnancy before.

“But the thought of helping these beautiful innocent creatures come into the world, it was very humbling,” Alexandra said.

Alexandra knew that Tree Kitty’s due date was coming and noticed that the cat kept coming running over to her in the kitchen.

She would then lead Alexandra to a corner where there was a little cubby hole. This is where Tree Kitty wanted to set up her nursery.

The spot was made cozy with some blankets and soft things, and Tree Kitty gave birth about an hour later.

“I open the door and there’s the first kitten,” Alexandra recalls. “She had five kittens and we expected only three. Just when we thought mama cat couldn’t bring us any surprises.”

The other animals in the house made sure to give Tree Kitty the same she needed to feel safe and comfortable with her newborns.

“I definitely believe compassion is there among our crew,” Alexandra said.

Tree Kitty’s little nursery was eventually moved to the bathtub where she could have privacy and her kitties could stay close to her without wandering off.

“Here she is in the bathtub, right? And I’m like this poor cat has no situation. I was like maybe she’ll be interested in the iPad,” Alexandra explained.

And she was.

Tree Kitty loved watching the birds on her iPad as she laid down and nursed her kittens. Michael and Alexandra were thankfully able to find homes forever for Tree Kitty’s kittens.

“We found all the kittens amazing homes we ended up keeping Tree Kitty and her baby Willow,” Alexandra said.
