If a stray dog turned up on your porch, we can guarantee that most people would take the dog in. But what happens if you were away at the time?
Modern technology is a wonderful thing. It allows us to see exactly what’s going on in and around our house when we’re not home, giving us a higher sense of security. But the one downfall to being able to see what’s going on when you’re out of town is that you can’t necessarily do anything about it.
When Emily’s neighbor spotted a black labrador on her porch through her security camera when she was out of town, she had to get creative to make sure the dog got the help it needed.
As the woman was far from home, she contacted her other neighbors who tried to capture the stray. But the dog was pretty nervous, and every time they got close, he would run away from them.
Defeated, the neighbors eventually had to give up- and within time, the dog had disappeared. But just over a week later, when Emily was out walking her dog, she got a surprise.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, the black lab appeared at her feet. He seemed to feel more comfortable around Emily’s dogs, Kokro and Chibi, and followed them all the way back to Emily’s backyard.
He was still quite nervous and kept his tail down as he ate the dog food left out for him by Emily. But he seemed to know that she wanted to help him.
It was difficult work as Emily tried to coax the stray into her home.
“He looked like he had never been inside before,” she recalled. “He was looking around really sheepishly, (but) once we gave him a little bit of time, he picked a place to settle down. Even after just staying with us that first night, he started to look a little more joyful already.”
As soon as the lab was a little more settled, Emily booked him in for a vet’s checkup. Despite being underweight, he had no other problems, and was given the all-clear to return home with Emily.
Emily named the dog Mello, and decided that she was going to foster him for the time being.
Mello seemed to have been a stray all his life, and had to learn how to use the lead and become properly toilet trained. Thankfully, his two doggy siblings soon showed him the ropes, and he learned a lot through them. It wasn’t long before he was a part of their family.
“My dogs seemed to immediately like him and welcome him into their home,” Emily said.

Mello had separation anxiety, and Emily knew that he deserved someone’s full attention. It wasn’t long until she had found the perfect home for him, and it was time to say goodbye. Mello might have only been in her life for a short amount of time, but he had left pawprints on Emily’s heart.
“The whole experience was pretty incredible,” Emily recalled. “He was honestly one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met.”
