German Shepherds – irresistibly adorable as puppies (think cocked heads and lopsided ears) and strikingly beautiful and lovable as adults.
Recognized as a distinguished breed with a spot in the top rank of canine royalty, German Shepherds are courageous, confident, and intelligent.
They boast the ability to learn commands for many tasks and the notable trait of willingly putting their lives on the line in defense of loved ones. Often utilized as police dogs, service dogs, and obedience dogs, this breed is highly trainable with extreme loyalty and commitment. Impressive as these traits are, what stands out the most is the German Shepherd’s gentleness as a family pet. A steadfast guardian, this breed does exceedingly well in protecting its home and those who live in it.

So why would anyone abandon a German Shepherd just like that?
Found hiding under a car, this poor senior dog refused to leave its spot until the Hope For Paws team arrived.
It was a heartbreaking sight, seeing an old dog left alone to fend for itself on the streets. Thankfully, a concerned individual was able to alert the team and it didn’t take long for rescue to reach the dog.
Lisa Arturo of Hope For Paws took a simple yet gentle approach. She slowly knelt beside the vehicle where the dog sought shade, and began tossing cheeseburger bits in its direction.
The dog, clearly hungry, eagerly ate the food and followed Lisa’s cue, slowly inching its way out from under the vehicle.
Lisa continued to silently feed the dog while moving gradually away from the car.
The hungry dog continued to eat as it followed Lisa towards a spacious fenced-in area.
As the German Shepherd ate contentedly, Lisa managed to slowly fasten a “Lucky Leash” around its neck.
This allowed the team to lead the dog towards their car.
Sensing care and affection from the team, the German Shepherd was quiet and at ease during the entire ride – no doubt relieved and happy at finally being able to leave its life on the streets.
The team named the dog Amelia and brought her to the vet to see if her health was in check. Thankfully, the senior German Shepherd was perfectly healthy which meant it was ready for the next step of her new journey – her foster home.
Thriving in a new temporary home, Amelia is healthier and happier than ever. She gets her daily dose of outdoor playtime and exercise, and gets along with the other animals in the compound. From being left alone to suddenly having people care for her, Amelia is doing unbelievably well.
Though still waiting for the perfect family to adopt her, the German Shepherd is definitely in much better shape.
Thanks to the Hope For Paws team, another dog has been taken off the streets and given another shot at a better life.
Press play to watch Amelia’s hopeful new beginning unfold.
