Unlikely animal friendships are what we all wake up each morning, hoping to see more of. There is something so awesome about little animal friendships that you never expect.
Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary was the meeting place for one of these friendships, but it didn’t start out that way!
Juliana Castaneda, the founder of the sanctuary, lives in Columbia and was doing research on the stray dogs that lived in her immediate area. She wanted to record the number of dogs that roamed the area so she could have better information on the situation.
While walking and recording one day, she stumbled across a litter of puppies, apparently abandoned!
The puppies were all alone and drinking milk from a bowl. Not knowing the surrounding circumstances of the dogs, she couldn’t plan a rescue, especially with it being as late as it was. Making the tough decision, she went home.
Later that night, however, Juliana couldn’t sleep.
Laying in bed thinking about the abandoned dogs, Juliana couldn’t help but feel nervous for them. Finally, at first light, she rolled out of bed and went to see if they were still there. It was 5 am and quiet in the woods.
She found the dogs in the same spot and was able to track down where they lived.
After some sleuthing and research, she learned that the pups belonged to a nearby owner who already had a few other dogs. They didn’t care too much about the condition of the pups, and one of them had already died. Finding this out, she offered to adopt the pups. The owner agreed, and Juliana took ownership of the four dogs!
On her next trip to the US, she took the pups with her in hopes of finding them a home.
“In May I had to travel to the U.S. and I took with me three of the puppies, all that I could, and they found their forever homes,”
The sole puppy left behind was named Sri Ram, and he was unable to find a home. What happens next is where it gets really interesting!
Cut-scene to a dairy farm with a cow named Bernie.
Bernie started out his life on a dairy, but since he was a male, his owners wanted to get rid of him. When the owners realized that Bernie would be killed for meat if they sold him, they did their best to find a home for the 12-day-old cow. Through a string of people, Bernie ended up at Juliana’s animal shelter.
When Bernie and Sri Ram first met, it was immediately clear it was meant to be.
Through luck, both animals ended up in the same area one day. On their first day, they couldn’t help but romp around and play all day! Since they were both kids, the friendship took on special meaning for them.
The two have long lives ahead of them at the sanctuary!
Nobody is planning on telling either one of them that they aren’t the same species – they have no idea! When it comes to having a best friend, it doesn’t really matter what’s different between you, it’s about what’s you love in the other.
