Life isn’t always easy. Everyone is faced with challenges and obstacles that they probably didn’t expect. Scar was a 2-week-old kitten who was experiencing just that.
Scar was part of a litter of kittens that was found roaming a remote area of Arcata, California, all by themselves.
Savannah Anas, a marine biologist, told PEOPLE, “My best friend and I heard of a litter of kittens that had just been born 2.5 hours away from civilization. We drove out on a whim to see the kittens, hearing of one ‘that didn’t have an eye.’ We got there to find that he [Scar] had both eyes. While one was completely fine, the other was so incredibly swollen and infected. It was leaking puss like a fountain.”
“I’ve done a lot of work with biology and diseases and infections,” Savannah told ABC News.
“I knew that with the infection being so close to his brain, it was most likely fatal.”
Savannah immediately rushed Scar, the kitten, to the vet. It was clear he would need surgery, but no one, including the vet, could guarantee he would make it through the procedure.
“Scar was so tiny at only 2 weeks old and 8.5 ounces, that the doctor would not be able to hook him up to monitors, fit a breathing tube down his throat, or know how the anesthesia was affecting him through the procedure,” Savannah told The Dodo.
“The vet said, ‘I see it as a 50/50 chance. He either goes from this infection or he goes from this surgery.'”
Miraculously, however, Scar defied all odds.
To help Scar heal from his surgery and keep him from pawing and touching his stitches, Savannah got him a stylish little eye patch that’s even etched with his name.
“Scar loves his eye patch, and it doesn’t bother him at all,” Savannah said. “He never tries to take it off.
“I found it makes him more approachable rather than people being afraid of why he doesn’t have an eye.”
Despite having lost an eye, Scar is still confident and eager to explore the world.
“Scar loves exploring new places and going on outdoor adventures with me.”
“He gets along with everyone he meets.”
“Scar will follow me basically anywhere, even into the ocean, so I have to watch him. His only dislike that spooks him a little is the sound of a large crashing wave.”
“Scar also used to hate the water (a.k.a. baths), but now he loves them. He was even purring during his last bath.”
“I believe he trusts me and my judgment, knowing I wouldn’t ever let him get hurt.”
Once Scar was fully healed, he no longer had to wear his favorite accessory.
Now, he’s transformed into a gorgeous, full-grown cat— but his amazing sense of style still remains.
Savannah is so grateful to have Scar in her life— especially when the odds were against him. “I’m so glad I found him,” she said. “I became a mom overnight. It’s very fun but it’s also a lot of work.”
“He wanted to live and I needed to help him.”
