Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand has been looking after elephants who have nowhere else to go since 1995.
The sanctuary takes in baby elephants who lost their mothers to poaching. These babies wouldn’t be able to survive on their own in the wild. Elephant Nature Park looks after these orphaned elephants and gives them plenty of space to roam. Currently, there are 35 elephants living at the park.
In 2011, Bangkok experienced catastrophic flooding. This flooding displaced thousands of stray dogs, and these dogs desperately needed a new home. Elephant Nature Park decided to rescue these dogs.
Elephant Nature Park rescued about 2,000 dogs in total, and they brought 155 to their Chiang Mai elephant sanctuary. ENP built dog runs that were filled with ponds for the dogs to swim in and fun things for them to climb on. ENP’s dog population has continued to grow, and today they look after 400 dogs. These pups are also available for adoption.
ENP decided to introduce some of the dogs to the elephants, and it went amazingly well! The dogs and the elephants all got along.
The dogs stay in a herd, typically following a lead dog. They don’t bother the elephants, and the elephants don’t bother them. Sometimes, the elephants and dogs will hang out together! Some dogs will even hang out in front of the elephant shelter at night, excitedly waiting to see the elephants in the morning.
Elephant Nature Park has shared wonderful pictures of their elephants and dogs on their Facebook page. They have also released video showing just how well these animals get along.
The video shows the elephants and dogs spending their days together. Sometimes, the elephants and dogs swim together. Other times, they simply relax and take naps side by side!
Elephant Nature Park hopes that this video will show people that many different species of animals can get along:
“Many animals, even though different species, learn to live together. As humans, surely we can try to stay peaceful also, respecting others and living equitably in this community of earth’ s beings,” Elephant Nature Park wrote in the description of their YouTube video.
Elephant Nature Park does a great job looking after their dogs. Many of the dogs at Elephant Nature Park have gone on to great forever homes, like this sweet pup named Beryl.
Elephant Nature Park has helped save countless elephants and dogs, and they’ve given them all a wonderful, loving home with good friends and a dedicated staff. These dogs and elephants are all in good hands!
