Salty the horse knows the importance of quick power naps. Though it’s not often we see a horse sleep, this is a peek into how this particular horse spends her afternoons.
This happened on May 13, 2021 in Battleboro, North Carolina. This horse loves his naps and it seems to be a common occurrence. To the point that people have reached out to ask if he was okay.
Salty is perfectly fine.
Who wouldn’t want to just give everything up for a little shut eye in the middle of nowhere?
We humans NEED at least eight hours of sleep. Or more if you’re lucky. Horses are different when it comes to sleep requirements. They will doze off at varying moments during the day.
These beautiful animals will also have short bouts of deep sleep lying down in the middle of the night. You read that right, they do lay down.
Their sleeping patterns will change depending on their age. So how old is Salty?
Foals need frequent naps so they will spend about half of their day sleeping. That pattern goes on until they are about three months old. The frequency of the naps becomes less as they grow older.
They are more likely to stand at that point rather than lie down.
As for your question, yes, adult horses spend more time dozing while standing up than actually lying down. Well, maybe except for Salty here.
A viewer named Billy Yank commented, “They’re going to call animal control ” hahahaha right. Everyone passing by thinking your horse is dead. Nope, just chilling, snoozing.”
And that’s exactly what Salty’s owner experienced.
Another viewer said, “I know exactly how that horse feels. You can’t help but feel the call of the sand man when the perfect amount of sun and wind hits you in the late in the morning or afternoon lol.”

It is a very nice field, and it was a lovely day out. Salty just felt like we all do during a very lazy day.
Here’s a cool fact from The Spruce Pets though.
“Horses will lie down to sun themselves, and it is not unusual for several horses to lie down at the same time for a communal sunbath on a warm spring day. Often while several horses lay down, one or two others will remain standing… Horses tend to spend less time lying down in cold snowy conditions, although on a sunny day, some will snooze stretched out in the snow. Each horse has its own sleeping habits. Some will sleep only at night while others sleep during the day as well.”
Well who knew?
Salty is alone, but with a day like that, he certainly deserves to sprawl out and doze off for awhile.
It is hilarious to look at. He really won’t budge, letting his human come around to see him. At least he chose not to horseplay!
