Eleanor Sholz was traveling through France with her boyfriend and decided to go for a hike by herself.
She never imagined that the hike would be something that she just couldn’t get out of her head.
What she witnessed was pretty bizarre for your typical hike.
Scholz was making her way along a trail when she heard the sound of sheep bleating.
It wasn’t unusual because you’ll often find sheep in this area.
The sheep were coming her way. But when she got a closer look she saw something that completely astonished her.
She spotted another woman running along the trail with the sheep behind her.
She was being followed.
“It took me a moment to understand what I was seeing,” Scholz told The Dodo.
“At first, I thought maybe she was a shepherd, but she wasn’t dressed like any shepherd I’d ever seen, and it seemed unusual that a shepherd would be running. Then, I was concerned that she was being chased and that there might be some risk of being stampeded, so I got off of the trail and stepped behind a tree. When she stopped to talk with me, all of the sheep stopped and waited for her, and that’s when I realized that something truly whimsical was happening.”
The runner explained to Scholz that these were lost sheep. She didn’t know how they were lost but she decided to try and help them find their way.
They needed someone to follow and they thought she seemed like someone who would be good to follow.
So, they followed her. They didn’t seem to mind that they had stopped along their journey.
They trusted their new leader to do what she needed to do.
Some even decided to stop over and greet Scholz.
Can you imagine how weirded out Scholz must have been. Both women for that matter.
“They all just stopped and waited, it was the funniest thing,” Scholz said. “Some of them immediately walked over to me, and I was worried they’d start following me instead, but they stood there patiently while she and I talked. They didn’t seem stressed or particularly winded.”
When Scholz and the runner finished their chat, she continued along with her run.
And the sheep went on following her.
There was one point where Scholz thought that she might get suckered into being a shepherdess.
“The few sheep who had been checking me out as a possible new shepherd changed their minds when they saw their friends start to leave — ultimately the whole flock stuck together and followed the runner off down the trail,” she said.
The runner decided to take her new duties seriously. Her plan was to lead the sheep back to a pasture area that seemed like a place where the sheep should be.
“She seemed resigned to her new role as [a] shepherdess and left me with the impression that she would figure it out and find somewhere safe for them,” Scholz said. “I’d love to know the whole story, but I only got a brief glimpse of her wild sheep encounter and am happy just to have been able to witness it.”
Sholz took a video of the shepherdess and her sheep and posted it on Instagram where it went viral.
“One of the best things I’ve seen. Do you think they’re still chasing her?” her caption read.
