In early May 2018, police officers noticed a homeless German Shepherd wandering around in Echo Lake Park in Fort Worth, Texas.

This park is a notorious dumping ground for unwanted animals, so the officers guessed that the poor pup had been abandoned. The officers decided to call Judy Obregon, founder of local animal rescue group Our Abandoned Ones.

Obregon headed over to the park to try and save the dog. At first, the dog was scared of Obregon, and she would run whenever she saw her truck. Obregon put food out to show the dog that she could trust her.

“I knew it was extremely urgent to capture her,” Obregon wrote on Facebook. “Gaining trust began [with] studying her every move.”

One day, Obregon took video of the dog. The video showed Obregon trying to gain the dog’s trust. The pup didn’t run away, which was a good sign. She was slowly starting to warm up to Obregon.

A few days later, Obregon pulled up in her truck and found the dog waiting for her. Obregon knew then that the dog finally trusted her.

“I said the same thing to her every day, for her to know my voice and trust that one day her life would change. The look of worry, concern always gets me, and all so rewarding when we can change their frown, the fear they have into a smile,” Obregon says.

Once the German Shepherd trusted Obregon, she decided it was time to reveal her secret. The German Shepherd ran into the woods, and a few moments later, she ushered a scared pit bull into the field.

The two dogs walked up to Obregon’s truck, and Obregon’s heart melted. The pit bull was clearly nervous, and he had scars on his face that needed medical attention. Suddenly, Obregon’s mission changed—she now had two dogs to rescue.

“She made it a point: If you take me, you take my friend, too!” Obregon wrote.

Obregon led the dogs into her truck, and they happily settled into the backseat. The dogs seemed to know they were going somewhere safe!

Obregon gave the two dogs names—Clover for the pit bull and Iris for the German Shepherd. Then, she brought them to the veterinarian, where she learned both dogs were heartworm-free. The vet gave Clover antibiotics for his wounds, which are healing well. Clover was spayed, and she had a small cyst removed. Both pups are recovering, and they’re so happy to be together!

Obregon is currently searching for a foster home for these two bonded pups, a place where they can continue to heal together. These two dogs were very fearful when Obregon first found them. But now, they’ve learned to trust humans, and they’re on their way to a great life together!
