Pit bulls Maggie and Vito both had very rough lives. The two dogs had been used as fighting dogs, and they had the physical and emotional scars to prove it.

After years trapped in the dogfighting ring, Maggie and Vito were finally rescued by Detroit Bully Corps.

Detroit Bully Corps (DBC) is an animal rescue group that looks after ex-fighting dogs. The group typically has about 20-25 dogs at a time, and they take great care of these abused dogs.

Vito arrived at Detroit Bully Corps in 2012, and Maggie got there in 2013. While many of the dogs who arrive at the shelter are skittish, Maggie and Vito were both very friendly. And so, Detroit Bully Corps decided to introduce them to each other.

Workers at DBC brought the two dogs into their yard. The workers watched with bated breath as Maggie and Vito ran towards each other. Then, the two abused dogs began playing together!

The workers’ hearts melted as they saw the dogs running and playing without a care in the world. The dogs chased each other around the yard, sniffing each other as their tails wagged. They also shared a toy together!

Everyone at DBC loved seeing Maggie and Vito having fun together! William Bellottie, the organization’s president, said:

“They both truly had the heart of a champion. They both decided to shed the mental scars of an old life and move forward in a world that had given them every reason to throw in the towel. Some of you have followed the history of both canines, some of you are meeting these two for the first time. Both of these canines have shown a true will to thrive and enhance the lives of all they touch.”

Maggie and Vito are both doing great at DBC.

Maggie loves people more than anything, and she always enjoys a good cuddle. Maggie is also an ambassador for ex-fighting dogs. When school groups come to visit Detroit Bully Corps’ shelter, Maggie plays with the students. Everyone loves spending time with the sweet dog!

Vito is also as sweet as can be. The pup enjoys playing with toys, and he’s also a big fan of splashing around in the shelter’s kiddie pool on hot days.
