Maisy the pitbull lives quite the charmed life these days. But that wasn’t always the case. In fact, her original owners not only mistreated her, but they were going to euthanize the perfectly friendly pittie.
The first three years of Maisy’s life were spent being neglected and left outdoors in a kennel after she had one accident in the house. From then on, her “owners” planned to use her only for breeding.
But when she didn’t have puppies, they decided she didn’t serve any purpose at all and wasn’t worth keeping around and feeding any longer.
“At that point, they were like, ‘Well, she’s a waste of money to feed. She’s so ugly, nobody’s gonna want her. We’ll just put her down,’” her mom Marisa Elbert told The Dodo.
Luckily for Maisy, a family friend took her to a shelter to see if someone would adopt her even though she wasn’t properly socialized.
When the shelter posted her photo on social media, a friend of Elbert’s tagged her in a comment beneath the photo. It turns out the friend was concerned about her because not only had she just lost her parents but she was reeling from the death of her own beloved dog as well.
Elbert decided to go to the shelter to meet her. Why not?
It was then that she discovered that Maisy had a funny quirk — she loved to “chat!”
Maisy loves making “woo”-ing noises and is happy to do so whenever she’s spoken to. Elbert immediately fell in love with the little talking dog.
“Maisy’s woo-ing was something that made me adopt her. She does it when she’s extremely happy or excited. She’s so chatty and we talk all the time,” she said.
Together, they’ve both managed to ease each other’s pain — and add a lot of fun to their days as well.
Maisy is now safe and secure in a happy household!
And the adorable pittie is still chatting away!
“We have conversations throughout the day. It’s hilarious. The first day when I brought her home, we went down the driveway and I threw some balls for her and she was woo-ing on the way up, woo-ing on the way down. She was just so happy. It’s like she knew she was home,” Elbert told The Dodo.
Of course, adopting a pet that has been abused or neglected is a daunting task and Maisy had to learn how to live the good life. For example, she had to get used to living indoors, getting snuggles, and even being fed on a regular basis.
She had to be introduced to playing and toys as well.
In other words, Elbert had to acclimate her to having a home.
But it happened — and now the “barn hippo” or “woo-nicorn” (as her mom calls her) is enjoying her freedom, especially her “zoomies!”
Maisy’s gotten used to the comfort and affection and is now a part of a big, happy family that includes a cat sibling named Motor.
Elbert also has two horses that Maisy enjoys being around and — as of February — a new pittie brother named Andy. Andy too had a rough start to life, nearly starving to death within days of being born because his backyard breeder didn’t know he had a cleft palate.
(Maisy originally had a loving pittie brother named George as well who has since passed on.)
If your heart is warmed by the thought of Elbert and her sweet pets all finding happiness together, you should make sure to check out her Instagram account. It technically “belongs” to Maisy, but the whole family is featured throughout.
And, yes, Maisy still “woo”s! In fact, she’s still quite the little chatterbox.
