In fall 2017, animal rescuers found a litter of six kittens and their mom abandoned in a box in Florida. The animal shelter Broward County Animal Care took them in, and they started looking for a foster home for the little family.
At first, the shelter worried they wouldn’t be able to find a foster home for the seven cats.
But then, one of the staff members at the shelter, Amanda Kruczynski, fell in love with the family. She agreed to take all the cats in.
“I put them all into a carrier and took them home on my lunch break,” Amanda told The Dodo. “I knew they would need time to heal from what they had gone through and I wanted to be able to lend a hand in that. We never did find out how they came to be in that box that night or why they were abandoned.”
Amanda took great care of the family, and all the kittens started growing up. But there was one kitten who was different from all the rest: Meeseeks.
When the kittens first arrived at their foster home, Amanda noticed that Meeseeks was tinier than his siblings. He was too small to move around much, and he usually just stayed curled up in a ball. But the most unusual thing about him was his fur. It had a felt-like texture that made him look more like a plush toy than a real cat.
“Nobody believed his kitten photos were real,” Amanda said. “He looked like a little felt toy and his size made it that much more unbelievable.”
Since Meeseeks was so small and fragile, Amanda kept a close watch on him. She quickly fell in love with the little cat, and he loved her right back. Soon, Meeseeks began following Amanda around the house. As he got bigger, he started guarding and protecting her too.
One day, all six kittens got feline distemper, a disease that can be fatal. Thankfully, the kittens all survived.
Soon after this, it was time for Amanda to bring the kittens back to the shelter so they could find forever homes. Amanda had fostered lots of animals before, and while saying goodbye was difficult, she was always able to do it. But this time, she hesitated—she didn’t want to say goodbye to Meeseeks.
Amanda decided to adopt Meeseeks, and the kitten happily went to his new forever home.
Right after Amanda adopted Meeseeks, she made him an appointment with the vet.
Meeseek’s siblings had quickly recovered from their distemper, but Meeseeks was still suffering from ill effects weeks later. He started vomiting every day, and he had respiratory problems.
Amanda took Meeseeks to the vet, and after running lots of tests, the vet diagnosed him with feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia. Thankfully, this disease isn’t fatal, and with medicine, Meeseeks will be able to live a normal life with his family.
Once Meeseeks started feeling better, his true personality began to shine through.
“He’s extremely energetic!” Amanda said. “He absolutely loves to play with the laser pointer and would run around chasing it for hours if we let him! At night time he knows where I sleep and will scratch on my pillow until I let him under the covers. He has always remained extremely attached to me.”
Meeseeks is now about a year old, and his fur still has an unusual felt-like texture. Meeseeks loves his family more than anything, and they love him right back. Meeseeks has found the perfect place to call home!
