Welcome to the dog days of summer — or, perhaps in this case, the kangaroo days. Because here we are going to meet a kangaroo that has been taken in by a rescue family, and now only knows a life of luxury.

This kangaroo, named Rufus, is sure to melt your heart.

Rufus was adopted by the Haywood family at 8 months old.

The Haywood family runs an animal sanctuary called Pumpkins Patch Kangaroo Sanctuary. In total, they have 27 other kangaroos and 2 wombats on their property. But Rufus is the only one who invites himself inside the family’s house.

Rufus and his adoptive family have developed quite a routine together.

Through all their time spent together, Rufus and his family have gotten to know one another’s preferences pretty well. It’s safe to say that they’ve settled into an evening routine, like any family.

Rufus’ human mom says:

“Every evening, Rufus comes through the back door, wanting to come in and onto his couch so he can chillax for the evening on the couch with us, watch a bit of TV, have some cuddles. That kind of stuff.”

This kangaroo even has his own spot on the couch.

Since his adoption, Rufus has really made himself quite at home.

He’s even designated his own spot on the couch that only he is allowed to sit in. This is where he hangs out in the evenings, in between cuddles.

While most kangaroos would not be comfortable kicking back on a man-made object like the family couch, Rufus seems to have adjusted quite nicely. In fact, there are other kangaroos at the sanctuary, and none of them barge into the family home as Rufus does.

The Haywood family seems to love him as much as he loves them.

From all their time spent together, the family has grown to love Rufus the same way you would love your pet dog or cat.

This guy has a lot of loveable qualities, and his family loves to watch his hijinks. Rufus’ mom even tells him:

“We are so lucky to have you in our lives Rufus. Don’t ever change buddy. We love you so much, you’re the most kind and beautiful soul.”

Doesn’t that sound like something you might even say to your best friend?

Some of Rufus’ favorite things to do include cuddling with his adoptive dad.

Like any kangaroo, this guy is pretty energetic, but he also knows how to tone it down a bit and take in some good cuddle time. In fact, every evening when he comes in from the yard, he makes sure to claim his spot on the couch and then cuddle up with dad.

It’s pretty cute to watch, and they stay that way for hours until bedtime.

The bond between this kangaroo and his human family is beautiful to see.

It’s hilarious to see an animal acting so different from what we would expect from them.

I mean, most kangaroos are wild animals who don’t really seem to want to get too close to humans. But this family has warmed Rufus’ heart, and he has hopped right into theirs.

Just goes to show that a little bit of familial love and kindness can turn just about any wild animal into a sweet, cuddly baby.

See Rufus in all his adorable antics in the video below! You won’t regret it.
