What a little hero!

Dogs usually have a bit of a love/hate relationship with mailmen, and more often than not, the only stories we tend to hear regarding dogs and the postal service workers are negative ones.

It’s not uncommon for your dog to be scared of the mailman or to bark loudly and act territorial of your home. That’s why it was a refreshing surprise to read about one particular pooch who not only gets on great with his mailman – and even went above and beyond to help in a scary situation.

Meet Bowie, a Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frise mix who lives in Hoboken, New Jersey with his owner Cyndi Daeson and his cat and dog brothers and sisters. Bowie is a rescue dog, and he’s the perfect example of what happens when you provide an animal with a loving home.

Unlike most dogs, Bowie is best friends with the mailman, Morgan. Morgan is one of the local residents’ favorite postal workers. He really goes above and beyond, having learned the name of every dog in the area, and he will often bring treats for the local residents.

Whenever Morgan delivers mail to the house, Bowie leaps up and down excitedly with his tail wagging a-mile-a-minute. So when something happened to Morgan one day, Bowie was the first to know about it.

Cynthia wrote on Facebook:

“My dog alerted me today that something outside was wrong. He insisted I get out of bed and go to the front door and barked non stop. As it turned out, my mailman ( and friend ) was unconscious in his truck and had crashed into our car.”

Cynthia rushed to try and help, though it was looking like it was touch and go for the neighborhood’s favorite mailman. He was fighting some health conditions, which had possibly lead to him crashing his truck. It was a horribly distressing moment for Cynthia, but thank goodness Bowie had alerted her just in time.

“It was a terrible next hour that I don’t want to get into much but he was fighting brain cancer. To find him that way slumped over and barely breathing was horrible.”

Cynthia reflected on what would have happened if Bowie hadn’t have alerted her to the problem:

“If it wasn’t for Bowie I’m sure I’d have found him dead not much longer later. Bill and Bowie always have been buddies. Charlie, my dog that died, was Bill’s bud for 13 years.”

Bowie is a true hero, and we’re sure he was rewarded with lots of doggie treats! But what about Morgan?

Apparently, the brave mailman had already fought melanoma in his skin, which had sadly come back and spread to his brain. When he found out that it was Bowie who saved him, he was overwhelmed with gratitude. He added that he is feeling much better now, although he’s not sure that he’ll be able to keep his mailman job anymore.

The neighborhood knew that they wanted to do something to help. Morgan was loved by all and they wanted to give him the best fighting chance. Cynthia set up a GoFundMe to help pay Morgan’s medical bills. After only one day, they already raised over $1,000! Cynthia said:

“Our mailman is special. This is a special neighborhood I live in. It’s a little enclave, kind of in a world of its own. We’re all very close here. Bill has been part of us for 20 years or more. He’s a friend besides being a mailman.”

Thanks to Bowie, Morgan has lived to tell the tale. If you’d like to donate, please follow this link.
