Tragedy turns to triumph for some deserving pups and their adoptive mother.
When mama-to-be Poppy, was given a heartworm positive diagnosis, the staff at ‘Ruff Start Rescue Center’ knew it might not go well for the poor pooch. She had come from Texas, sick and pregnant, but was able to give birth to 10 healthy pups. Sadly, she would only enjoy being a mom for a short while.
“She had 10 puppies on July 7 but passed away on July 8.” – Lexi Johnson, a Ruff Start rescue foster
The heartwrenching moment turned to panic as the rescue center was now faced with separating the pups and giving them to foster volunteers to raise. That is until a call came into the rescue center about an interesting proposal.
As fate would have it, a sweet dog named Pepper just had a litter of puppies that didn’t make it.
Lexi and the other fosters didn’t waste any time picking up Pepper and they made sure to bring the puppies along for the ride. Would Pepper accept the puppies and be willing to take care of them? Although the foster volunteers had done a tremendous job, the puppies were much better off being cared for by another canine. Puppies learn so much through this important bond.
Lexi explained what happened when she got the call.
“There was a call from the reservation about a mom that had recently lost her puppies. Immediately when we picked her up we put her in the kennel and the puppies were in a kennel in the back of the car and her tail immediately started wagging.” – Lexi Johnson told Fox 9
Lexi told Fox 9 that when they brought Pepper back to the rescue center they put some blankets in a plastic kiddie pool and had her lay down. One by one the puppies were placed with Pepper and within 5 minutes they were all latching on.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle what happened…I’m trying not to tear up right now thinking about it.” – Lexi Johnson told Fox 9
According to Lexi, Pepper didn’t mind at all that the puppies weren’t hers.
She was going to be the best mom to them regardless. These were her puppies now. “Mama Pepper is doing fantastic with the babies.” – Lexi Johnson told Fox 9.
“Dog moms are the best in the world. If a litter or a single puppy needs to be mothered and nursed, generally they will mother and nurse them with no issues. They may look at them a little funny the first time or two they clean them up, but they nearly always accept the new responsibility with ease and gentleness.” – Revival Animal Health
Pepper is a natural foster mama.
Thanks to Pepper and the foster volunteers at the rescue center, all 10 puppies are now getting the best start in life and we are pretty certain that Poppy is now resting easily.
