We have all witnessed the unending kindness and loves that dogs can show. They have a capacity for caring that astounds us every day! There are few moments where that love is expressed as well as it is when talking about “dog moms.”
Dogs have an incredible maternal drive that reminds us of how gentle they can be.
A “maternal drive” is a mother’s natural push to care for their children. When a human mom holds their little one for the first time, that feeling is the maternal instinct! It is a beautiful thing that bonds mom and baby in a totally unique way.
Mama dogs have a strong bond with their pups, just like humans and their babies!
All it takes is a bit of time spent around a new doggy mom to see how much they care for their pups. As any mother knows, what wouldn’t you do for your babies? Mama dogs express that same kind of love.
The story of Georgia the dog is one that showcases the wonder and beauty of being a mother – albeit with a unique spin!
Georgia was a stray dog who lived on the US-Mexico border. An Australian Shepherd mix, Georgia wandered the streets, relying on the occasional scraps she could find and on the rare kindness from strangers.
The life of a street dog isn’t a great one.
Stray dogs live tough lives. They are often starving and covered in horrible diseases. Thankfully, Georgia was found by Sunshine Dog Rescue from Phoenix, Arizona. Sunshine Dog Rescue took the sweet dog in, only to discover something incredible.
Georgia was going to be a mom!
Soon after being taken in, the vets discovered that Georgia was pregnant! Her time alone on the streets had now turned into a future with a forever home and her very own pups.
Unfortunately, disaster struck.
Georgia’s good news didn’t last long. She was unable to carry the pups to full term, and they were all born prematurely. None of them survived. Anita Osa, the founder of the shelter, said:
“I’ve never had a mom dog lose a whole litter before. The best way I could describe it was she was frantic. It was so sad, she was looking for those babies. She tore up the toddler mattress we had her on, trying to find her babies.”
The shelter decided they were going to try and help with Georgia’s pain of losing her litter.
Reaching out online, they asked if anyone had any orphaned puppies that needed a mom to look after them. After looking, they didn’t get anyone that could help… until they got a special message.
There was a litter of kittens who needed someone to look after them.
Osa didn’t know if Georgia would readily accept the kittens, fearing what would happen when they were together. Deciding to give it a go anyways, they placed Georgia and the baby cats together.
Immediately, Georgia bonded with them!
Almost like they were her own pups, Georgia started caring for the kittens as any good mother would. Osa thinks that the kittens probably have no idea that their “mom” is even a dog! The little family is a cute example of just how far a mother’s love really goes.
